Absentia, a short-lived thriller from Amazon Prime, should be on your "binge watch" shortlist. The series lasted three seasons for the streamer, amounting to thirty total episodes. In retrospect, that was the perfect amount. It's a series that viewers can get through quickly, with plenty of pulse-pounding moments and twists along the way.

Absentia stars Stana Katic as an FBI agent who is kidnapped and held captive for six years. From this starting point, the show propulsively unravels who did it, and why.

At the same time, Katic's character, Special Agent Emily Byrne, starts to unravel a bit herself as well, as she processes her trauma and adapts to her new reality.

Amazon's "Absentia" Is A Strong Candidate For Your Next Binge Watch; Here's Why

The Three-Season Thriller Is A Deeply Personal "Whodunnit"

There's a procedural dimension to Absentia, of course; Byrne's memories of her time in captivity are fragmented, and the show follows her step-by-step as she seeks to solve her own case. Then there's the personal dimension to her story as well. When she disappears, Byrne leaves behind a husband, Nick, and young son, Flynn.

When she returns, her husband has remarried, and Flynn has spent much of his life with a stepmother. Further complicating things? Nick also works at the Bureau. The excitement of Absentia largely comes from watching how the personal and procedural threads interweave, a web that becomes more complex, and more tense, as the show goes.

Absentia's Twists And Turns Make It A Satisfying Binge, Even If It's Not A Perfect 10/10 Show

Absentia Is Solidly Watchable Modern TV

Close up of Byrne from Absentia, her eyes wide as something off-camera surprises her.

Absentia has its share of tricks up its sleeve. Its overarching mystery has the prerequisite red herrings and dead ends, while leading to enough moments of action and tension on an episode-by-episode basis to keep viewers hooked. To be fair, it's not a perfect show, but it is perfectly bingeable from start to finish.

The show was canceled by Amazon after three seasons, but was given enough time to craft the final stretch of Season 3 episodes into a suitable endgame for the show. It stands out as a product of the raised bar of modern television. Better than many similar shows, but not quite up to the standards of contemporary TV greatness.

If you're looking for a show for your next binge, one with a strong opening hook, that you're going to be willing to stick with through its highs and lows, Absentia checks all the boxes. Absentia's three-season run on Amazon Prime had its moments of intense and evocative TV drama, and it shouldn't be overlooked.
