Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord’s first season has been fully released now after consecutive weeks with two new episodes airing each Monday, landing its finale squarely and ceremoniously on May 4, also known as Star Wars Day. The second season is already in development, thankfully, and it will be neat to explore Maul and Devon Izara’s strained relationship further, as well as Solo: A Star Wars Story’s Crimson Dawn syndicate subplot that Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord is connecting the dots for.

Star Wars Lore Is A “Campfire Story”

Maul Clone Wars Spider-Body In Shadow Lord Episode 7-8

According to ComicBook, Witwer believes that Star Wars lore should be interpreted as “campfire stories.” This way, it is understood that no one character is omniscient in the Star Wars universe, and fans are not necessarily meant to be, either.

Talking about, did Ahsoka Tano have blue lightsabers in the Siege of Mandalore, or were they green? Depends on which campfire you heard that story. Did Starkiller yank a Star Destroyer out of the sky, or did he mind trick the pilot? Well, depends on which campfire; who you were around when you heard the story, and who the teller of the story is.”

Star Wars lore spans thousands of years, with the Skywalker Saga alone spanning multiple generations between Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace in 32 BBY and Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker in 35 ABY. Across an immense galaxy full of habitable planets and moons, it absolutely makes sense that some things would be perceived as myth, much less left unbeknownst to them.

This analogy is never more explicitly true in-universe than in Star Wars’ sequel trilogy era, too, with characters either being completely unbeknownst to the events of the prequel and original trilogies, or only having heard tell of these events as whispers in the wind. For example, Rey, Finn, and Han Solo might as well be seated around their own campfire in the Millennium Falcon in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens when discussing the possible whereabouts of Luke Skywalker: “It’s true. The Force, the Jedi, all of it. It’s all true.”

Star Wars Canon Is Fluid

Starkiller and Proxy in The Force Unleashed

Beyond Star Wars lore that has been outwardly acknowledged in movies and TV shows, there is plenty of Star Wars content that is drifting in the non-canon Legends aether, including Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. If the only way for the story of Darth Vader’s secret apprentice in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 to be told is at in-universe ‘campfires,’ then so be it.

Besides, the more that shows like Andor: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord tease fun Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Easter eggs as their own campfire stories, the more there will be hope in a galaxy far, far away for Galen Marek/Starkiller to resurface and be folded into the canon proper. Meanwhile, the theory that Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord’s Devon Izara is Darth Talon has not yet been officially disproven.

Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord Season 2 is currently in development.
