Hannah has been writing about horror, sci-fi, and all things nerdy since 2021. At Collider, she covers news and conducts interviews, along with contributing features that dive deep into genre storytelling and why it works. If there’s something lurking in the shadows, she’s probably already writing about it if she's not too busy watching a tape from her VHS collection.

Road trip comedies work best when they fully embrace bad decisions, and there are countless examples. The entire genre usually depends on characters making increasingly reckless choices while chasing some wildly unrealistic dream, and the more sincere those characters are about the journey, the funnier the surrounding chaos becomes. Music-driven coming-of-age stories especially thrive on that energy because teenage ambition and absolute overconfidence tend to create disasters almost immediately.

That spirit appears central to Nimrods, the upcoming comedy inspired by Green Day’s early years touring in vans across the country. As part of Collider’s Summer Preview Event, we’re thrilled to exclusively reveal a new image from the movie featuring Mason Thames and Mckenna Grace shopping in a convenience store. Written and directed by Lee Kirk, the movie follows three friends who travel to Los Angeles after mistakenly believing their band has landed an opening slot for Green Day on New Year’s Eve, kicking off a chaotic cross-country trip filled with increasingly ridiculous adventures.

Your Result Your Perfect Band Is Revealed

Based on your personality, energy, and taste, the classic rock band that matches your soul is…

⚡ AC/DC

You are pure, undiluted rock energy. You don't need tricks, trends, or theatrical gimmicks — you have something more powerful: a riff that hits like a thunderbolt and an attitude that never wavers. Like AC/DC, you understand that simplicity executed with absolute conviction is its own form of genius. You're the person in the room who doesn't overthink it, doesn't pretend, and never turns the volume down. The highway to hell is a state of mind — and you've been on it since day one.

👅 The Rolling Stones

You've got swagger that can't be taught. Rooted in the blues and soaked in street-level attitude, you move through life with a loose, dangerous elegance that draws people in without ever trying too hard. Like the Stones, you've seen it all, done most of it, and somehow look better for it. You're not chasing perfection — you're chasing truth, groove, and that electric moment when everything clicks. Can't always get what you want? You tend to get it anyway.

👑 Queen

You are magnificent, and you know it — not from arrogance, but from an unshakeable sense of self that has never needed anyone's permission. Like Queen, you defy every category people try to place you in. You blend the epic with the intimate, the operatic with the anthemic, the serious with the playful. You live boldly, love fiercely, and perform every aspect of your life as though the whole world is watching. Because sometimes it is. We are the champions — and so are you.

🎸 The Beatles

You have the rarest of gifts: the ability to make something that feels both deeply personal and universally human. Like The Beatles, you're a natural connector — someone whose warmth, curiosity, and creative instincts draw people together across every divide. You believe in melody, in craftsmanship, and in the quiet power of a song that says exactly what someone needed to hear. You've changed the people around you just by being who you are. All you need is love — and you give it generously.

‘Nimrods’ Is Inspired by Green Day’s Early Touring Years

Nimrods-Watermark

In addition to Grace and Thames, Nimrods stars Kylr Coffman, Ryan Foust, Ignacio Diaz-Silverio, Keen Ruffalo, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Fred Armisen, Bobby Lee, and Sean Gunn. Green Day members Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tre Cool also serve as producers on the project, helping shape a story inspired by the band’s early years living out of vans and touring across the country before becoming one of the biggest punk bands in the world. Green Day started touring the United States for the first time in 1990 following the release of their first album, 39/Smooth.

The cast also gives the project an especially strong comedic lineup. Between performers like Armisen, Lee, Gunn, Fischer, and Kinsey, the movie looks ready to embrace a much broader and rowdier sense of humor alongside the emotional coming-of-age elements. At the same time, actors like Thames and Grace continue building particularly strong resumes among younger performers, especially in projects balancing comedy, drama, and genre storytelling. Between the Green Day connection, the ensemble cast, and the movie's cross-country punk chaos, Nimrods already feels positioned to become one of the summer’s more entertaining coming-of-age comedies.

Nimrods premieres in theaters on August 14, 2026. Stay tuned to Collider for one more day as our Summer Preview Event wraps up tomorrow with exclusive looks at some of the biggest upcoming movies of the season.
