5 Kindle accessories every user should have (and why they make such a big difference)

Reading has become such a crucial part of my bedtime routine over the past decade that I read at least one or two books each week. Because I read so much, I've come to love my Kindle -- it's the only way I can get through as many books without draining my retirement fund down to nothing.

I've had a few Kindles over the past 14 years and have gotten near daily use out of each one. As a result, I've come to learn about which Kindle accessories enhance the reading experience. Just like those who prefer to read physical books have their favorite bookmarks and reading lights, avid Kindle readers have favorite cases, straps, or holders for their e-readers. I've gathered my favorite Kindle accessories that have enhanced my reading experience.

My favorite Kindle accessories

This is one of the best Kindle cases I've tried. It fits snugly but is more protective than most I've used. While the back is thick, it still works with wireless chargers for the Signature Edition Kindle, like my Kindle Paperwhite SE. The Burga case also has a handle on the inside of the front cover so you can easily hold it one-handed when you're reading.

This is probably my favorite of all the Kindle accessories I've tested because it is truly a game-changer. Reading has become essential in my nightly routine, and being able to hold my Kindle easily with this Strapsicle has made it so much more comfortable. I can lie on my side and just hold my hand up with the Kindle to read, leaving my thumb free to pass the page.

I used to roll my eyes when I'd see Kindle remote controls online, but my eight-year-old practically squealed in excitement at the idea. I have to say, I'm pretty sold after trying it. This is an inexpensive RF remote control and page-turner, so it's a two-part device. This is perfect for people who like to read with their Kindle on a stand or while exercising. I prop up my Kindle on my headboard and lie in bed, then press the remote control button to pass the page.

This Made for Amazon wireless charging dock is made by Anker, so you know you're getting a great charger. It only works with the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition, which supports wireless charging. I leave it on my nightstand and simply place my Kindle there when I'm done reading -- no more fumbling with a cord in the dark.

Kindle Unlimited and Netflix are the only two subscriptions I've maintained for years -- everything else comes and goes. KU gives you unlimited access to over four million e-books, magazines, and audiobooks for $11.99. Once you're done with a book, you can return it and borrow a new one. Not all books are available with a KU subscription, however.

While I test tablets and other devices for work, I'm also a voracious reader and have been a Kindle user for over a decade. I enjoy staying on top of the latest technologies and devices as they come out so I never miss out on new gadgets.

As a ZDNET writer, I ensure everything I write about is worth your time and money. We're writers, not salespeople, so I don't recommend a product that I can't stand behind.

Putting a pop or grip on your Kindle is a matter of preference. A lot of Kindle users like to put a 'pop' or a grip like a Popsocket on them for comfort. This works similarly to the Strapsicle, letting you hold your Kindle with one hand.

I prefer the Strapsicle over a pop because it's easier on my hand, as the weight of the Kindle is distributed across my entire hand instead of two fingers. I also like being able to take off the Strapsicle to put a case on if I'm going somewhere or want to use the charging dock.

If you'd rather skip the Strapsicle for a more permanent solution, the PopSocket works as a grip for your Kindle.
