Netflix’s best movies in January 2025 mark the beginning of an exciting new year for the streaming service. Netflix remains the biggest name in the streaming game, and while it has a lot of competition these days, it still delivers big titles with both its acquired movies and the original movies it continues to churn out. January 2025 shows a nice mix of both, with something for fans of all tastes and across all genres.
There has been a lot of big news on the television side of Netflix in recent weeks, with Stranger Things officially wrapping its filming of the final season, reminding fans that 2025 will see the streamers’ biggest series come to an end, along with the end of its oldest series, Cobra Kai. However, January shows the movie side of Netflix is still strong with some buzzworthy and hit original titles that subscribers can enjoy in the first month of 2025.
- To All the Boys I've Loved Before (2018) [Romantic Comedy] - Based on the popular young adult novel, To All the Boys I've Loved Before finds Lara (Lana Candor) living out a teenage nightmare as all of her love letters to boys in school become public.
- Leave the World Behind (2023) [Thriller] - Oscar winners Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali collide in the intense thriller Leave the World Behind, which embraces the terror and awkwardness of two families sharing a rental home as the country is seemingly torn apart by an unknown threat.
- The Power of the Dog (2021) [Western Drama] - Acclaimed director Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog won an Oscar for the gripping revisionist Western that stars Benedict Cumberbatch as a cold and mean-spirited rancher who hides a secret about himself.
- All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) [War Drama] - An adaptation of the seminal anti-war novel, All Quiet on the Western Front will shock and frustrate viewers as it puts them into the mayhem and horror of World War I through the eyes of the soldiers while also looking at the inaction of the officers sending them to their deaths.
- May December (2023) [Romantic Drama] - Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore go head-to-head as fellow Oscar winners in the story of an actress who meets with a controversial woman to research for a role.
- The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021) [Animated Comedy] - A wild animated comedy about a dysfunctional family who are stuck together for a cross-country road trip which is made slightly worse when a robot apocalypse threatens to end humanity.
- Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (2024) [Action Comedy] - Eddie Murphy returns along with that iconic theme song as Detroit cop Axel Foley as he goes back to posh Beverly Hills to investigate a case involving his estranged daughter and a former colleague.
- You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah (2023) [Teen Comedy] - Adam Sandler's entire family gets in on this coming-of-age comedy about a young girl dealing with young romance, friendship drama, and frustrating parents while preparing for her Bat Mitzvah.
- The Gentlemen (2020) [Crime Comedy] - Guy Ritchie assembles an all-star cast, including Matthew McConaughey, Colin Farrell, Hugh Grant, and Charlie Hunnam in a story of a drug lord looking to go legitimate and finding that it is not so easy.
- Lift (2024) [Action Comedy] - Not keen to let his friend Dwayne Johnson rule action movies, Kevin Hart steps into the genre as the leader of a band of thieves planning the heist of a plane while in midair.
- Dolemite Is My Name (2019) [Period Comedy] - Comedy icon Eddie Murphy gives one of his best performances as another comedy icon, Rudy Ray Moore, who became a cult icon thanks to his Dolemite character and legendary low-budget movie.
- Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024) [Buddy Cop Action] - Continuing to prove they are bad boys for life, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reteam as best friends and partners, Mike and Marcus, as they go on the run from the law in order to clear that name of their late mentor.
- Rebel Ridge (2024) [Action Thriller] - Rebel Ridge is a movie that relishes in the concept of villains choosing the exact wrong guy to mess with as Aaron Pierre plays a former marine who is forced to dispense some harsh justice when he comes in conflict with corrupt police officers in a small community.
- Under Paris (2024) [Horror Thriller] - Ignoring the lack of logic in its plot, Under Paris' idea of a shark lurking in the waters of the Seine makes for one of the most entertaining shark attack movies in years.
- Enola Holmes (2020) [Period Comedy] - As it turns out, the Holmes family produces a surprising amount of skilled detectives with Millie Bobby Brown starring as Enola Holmes, Sherlock's younger sister, as she seeks answers about her missing mother.
- Damsel (2024) [Action Fantasy] - Millie Bobby Brown continues her successful partnership with Netflix in this fantasy adventure as a young woman trapped in a dragon's lair who must prove herself a damsel capable of saving herself from distress.
- The Killer (2023) (2023) [Action Thriller] - David Fincher returns to Netflix with his latest thriller starring Michael Fassbender as an assassin who is either very good or very bad at his job, as he deals with the fallout of a mission gone wrong.
- Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022) [Mystery Thriller] - Benoit Blanc returns with his accent as strong as ever in this Knives Out sequel in which he is invited to a murder mystery game on a billionaire's private island, only for the game to turn all too real.
- Maestro (2023) [Biopic] - Bradley Cooper steps back behind the camera while undergoing a transformative performance in this Leonard Bernstein biopic that focuses largely on his complex relationship with his wife Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan).
- tick, tick... BOOM! (2021) [Biopic] - Lin-Manuel Miranda makes his feature film directorial debut fittingly about another Broadway legend, Rent creator Jonathan Larson, with Andrew Garfield showing off his singing skills in the lead role.
- Atlas (2024) [Sci-Fi] - Jennifer Lopez gets back into the action genre as a counter-terrorism agent and AI-skeptic who finds she has to work with Artificial Intelligence to apprehend a robot gone rogue.
- Always Be My Maybe (2019) - [Romantic Comedy] - Randall Park and Ali Wong make for a great rom-com duo in Always Be My Maybe as two childhood friends flirting with the idea of a romance, but Keanu Reeves steals the show in his wild cameo.
- They Cloned Tyrone (2023) [Sci-Fi] - John Boyega, Teyonah Parris, and Jamie Foxx make for a wild trio who uncover a sinister science operation hidden in their community, which as the title suggests, features a bit of cloning.
- Emilia Perez (2024) [Musical Crime Drama] -The ambition of taking an intense crime story and turning it into a musical pays off as Emilia Pérez stars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Karla Sofía Gascón in the story of a ruthless drug lord who seeks to retire from the dangerous life and fake their own death.
- The Piano Lesson (2024) [Drama] - Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Danielle Deadwyler, and Ray Fisher provide more than enough star power for this August Wilson adaptation that tells the story of a family's ancestral grand piano and the dark history surrounding it.
- Spellbound (2024) [Family Fantasy] - Princess Ellian has more reason than most teenagers to be embarrassed by her parents, as the king and queen are transformed into monsters in this latest Netflix original animated feature.
- Maria (2024) [Drama] - Angelina Jolie’s first movie in three years is an instant reminder of her immense talents as she stars in this thoughtful and quiet biopic of renowned opera singer Maria Callas during her final days.
- Carry-On (2024) [Thriller] - As if holiday travel wasn’t stressful enough, Carry-On places Taron Egerton’s TSA agent in a life-or-death situation with Jason Bateman’s villain pulling the strings.
