Netflix's best movies to watch this weekend come in different genres, and with Valentine's Day right around the corner, there are two releases that would fit the occasion. On last weekend's Netflix movie recommendations, I talked about Bones & All, M3GAN 2.0, and Eleanor the Great. As can be seen, the list explored different genres.
When looking at the best movies on Netflix to watch this weekend, I found two perfect companion pieces to events that have either recently happened or are coming soon. The third release is a star-studded comedy that I'm convinced deserves more love than it has gotten so far. That said, Netflix subscribers will be well-served with all three films.
3 Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (2016)
First up is a movie that is already climbing Netflix's charts. Released in 2016 to $77.1 million worldwide, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates was not a major theatrical hit. However, the comedy, which sees two chaotic brothers finding "respectable" dates to bring to their sister's wedding through Craigslist, which, of course, descends into madness quickly, is now a streaming hit.
Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates is currently the 2nd most-watched movie on Netflix in the United States. As such, anyone who has yet to give it a try is missing out on a lot of fun. The comedy's cast includes multiple stars with impeccable comedic timing: Zac Efron, Adam Devine, Aubrey Plaza, and Anna Kendrick.
2 Focus (2015)
Focus is one of the many movies that arrived on Netflix on February 1. The crime thriller has some comedic elements, making it the perfect film to be watched after Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates and before our final, and more serious, entry on this Netflix weekend movie binge. Focus stars Will Smith and Margot Robbie.
The movie follows Smith's veteran conman Nicky Spurgeon as he trains and gets romantically entangled with Robbie's rookie con artist Jess Barrett. Three years after Nicky ends their relationship, Jess reappears as a fully realized thief just when Nicky is ready for a big score. With Robbie's Wuthering Heights being the biggest Valentine's Day release next weekend, Focus feels timely.
1 Ex Machina (2014)
Finally, the last entry on the list is simply one of the best Sci-Fi movies of all time. Ex Machina tells the story of Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at Blue Book who wins a one-week trip to CEO Nathan Bateman's (Oscar Isaac) home. When arriving there, he is asked to ascertain what level of consciousness Ava (Alicia Vikander), a female robot, has.
Ex Machina not only has a talented cast and great visual effects, but the Sci-Fi thriller's intense tone, as Ava slowly begins to show just how intelligent she really is, never lets up. This is the movie that will give viewers the perfect discharge of adrenaline to get ready for the week ahead. Ex Machina has a near-perfect 92% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. It is a must-watch on Netflix.
