Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Jar Jar #1
24 years later, Star Wars has finally redeemed Jar Jar Binks. Despite being introduced as the goofball comic relief in The Phantom Menace, Star Wars saw Jar Jar becoming the Gungan representative in the Galactic Senate as seen in Attack of the Clones. However, this led to a major manipulation which directly resulted in the rise of the Empire.
In Marvel's new and canonical Star Wars: Jar Jar Binks #1, the new comic written in part by Jar Jar actor Ahmed Best sees the classic prequel character making up for his greatest mistake. Remarkably, Jar Jar Binks managed to redeem himself in more ways than one, even if they were largely done behind the scenes.
Jar Jar's Worst Mistake Was Giving Palpatine Emergency Powers In Attack of the Clones
In Attack of the Clones, Jar Jar was manipulated by Palpatine himself to propose granting the Supreme Chancellor emergency powers, allowing the Republic to go to war against the Separatists while also giving Palpatine more unilateral power over the Republic.
While Jar Jar believed he was helping protect the Republic during crisis, he instead gave Palpatine the authority needed to centralize control and expand his power, eventually allowing him to turn the Republic into his very own Galactic Empire by the end of Revenge of the Sith.
What Happened To Jar Jar Binks After The Clone Wars?
Image via Disney+In the canonical Aftermath novels set after the original trilogy, Jar Jar’s fate was revealed after the fall of the Empire. Having returned to Naboo, Jar Jar was shunned by most adults, who blamed him for his large role in the fall of galactic democracy and Palpatine's rise.
Becoming an outcast once more, Jar Jar was reduced to performing for children as a street clown. That said, Binks ends up befriending and taking in an orphan boy whose parents were killed in an Imperial bombing. However, we now know that Jar Jar deserves far more credit than he ever received.
Star Wars Finally Reveals How Jar Jar Secretly Redeemed Himself
24 years after Attack of the Clones, Jar Jar #1 reveals the truth: despite being publicly disgraced after the Clone Wars, Binks was secretly instrumental in laying the groundwork for the Rebel Alliance itself.
Not only did Binks help establish private communications networks used by early Rebels like Andor's Luthen Rael, but Jar Jar also partnered with Jedi Master Kelleran Beq before the Clone Wars' end to create a hidden network of agents, while also becoming the voice of the people of Urubai, a planet where miners were being overworked for the Republic, a direct consequence of Palpatine's emergency powers.
If that wasn't enough, Jar Jar #1 also confirms that Binks saved the life of Mira Bridger, the woman responsible for creating the new private radio network and the future mother of Jedi Ezra Bridger. Furthermore, Jar Jar #1 confirms that it was indeed Binks' ship that Beq used to get The Mandalorian's Grogu to safety during Order 66.
Taking all of that into account, it's actually quite incredible that while Jar Jar's greatest mistake helped create the Empire, he also secretly redeemed himself by laying the foundations for the Rebel Alliance in the Star Wars canon.
Star Wars: Jar Jar #1 is available now from Marvel Comics.
