10 Zelda Characters Who Deserve Their Own Spin-Off

4 hours ago 8

There have been so many stories told across the history of The Legend of Zelda, many of which focus specifically on the three main characters of Link, Zelda, and Ganon/Ganondorf. Although perhaps not as big a mascot as Mario, Link and Zelda have still become iconic in Nintendo's history, and their games are day-one purchases for many fans. Mainline games in the series span various timelines and occasionally explore vastly different themes and adventures.

There have been many unique announcements celebrating Zelda's 40th Anniversary, and even more rumors and speculations on new game ideas and remakes that could be coming. While nothing new has been announced for any spin-offs with Hyrule's background characters, there are so many that could become incredibly fun games in their own right. Hopefully, they would even turn out better than Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland.

Hestu, Makar, And The Koroks Deserve A Game

Their Lore, And A Lot Of Happy Chaos

Hestu shaking his maracas as three Koroks dance in front of him in Tears of the Kingdom.

Koroks seem to come with a "love 'em or hate 'em" kind of feeling, but regardless of which side of the debate you fall on, it's hard to deny that their lore is fascinating. Originally the human-like Kokiri, they evolved to their current forms after the Great Flood to be able to travel and plant forests, and are looked after by the Great Deku Tree.

A Korok spin-off game could be made as a cozy puzzle game where you have to search for them, similar to in Breath of the Wild, which was a relaxing and fun part of the game for many of us. Alternatively, they could have a game done Pikmin-style, an adventure with Hestu and the Korok's having to solve mysteries, or even a Just Dance game with Hestu and Makar. Truly, the possibilities these cute little nature spirits present are nearly endless.

Happy Mask Salesman's Adventures

Who IS This Creepy Salesman?

The Happy Mask Salesman sits at his desk in Ocarina of Time.

There are few characters in The Legend of Zelda series who are as interesting as the Happy Mask Salesman. This traveling merchant is emotionally unstable, shifting from incredibly cheerful to suddenly being intensely angry or distraught and even his merchandise is unique, selling only masks.

The Happy Mask Salesman appears in a couple of games, but most notably in Majora's Mask. Kicking off the story, he was out on a little adventure of his own while looking for new Masks, but was ambushed by the Skull Kid and had Majora's Mask stolen from him.

Besides being an effective way to start the events of Majora's Mask, this little anecdote also proves that the Happy Mask Salesman tracks down his own masks rather than being simply a merchant. I would love to see a game that puts the Happy Mask Salesman in the role of the protagonist, where we can join his adventures in obtaining these unique masks around Hyrule.

Groose As A Main Character

After All, He Wanted It To Be Called "The Legend Of Groose"

Groose from Zelda Skyward Sword

In the game The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Link is often bullied by Groose, a student at the Knight Academy in Skyloft who is jealous of Link's relationship with Zelda. Groose is comically vain and stubborn, but throughout the game is shown to be a pretty decent guy at heart, even if his actions towards Link make it hard to see.

Groose is pretty ridiculous throughout Skyward Sword. He not only wants to call the world "Grooseland" but then also wants the story to be called "The Legend of Groose" which actually could be a fun point of view.

Instead of simply making a remastered version of Skyward Sword, why not make a spin-off that lets players experience the game from Groose's perspective? The Legend of Groose is certainly a fun way to re-experience this story, and might even give us a new perspective on Groose's bullying actions at the start of the game.

Linkle Is A Perfect Character For A Spin-Off

Currently Only Seen In Hyrule Warriors

Linkle fighting stalchild mobs in Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition.

You may not be familiar with the character Linkle, as she's only appeared in another spin-off from the Zelda universe, Hyrule Warriors Legends. Despite this, I feel that this girl absolutely needs her own spin-off game, as she's such an intriguing character.

Linkle is a young woman who raises Cuccos in a small village in Hyrule. However, ever since she was a very small child, she believed herself to be a reincarnation of the Legendary Hero, partly because of a compass that her grandmother gave her. Therefore, when Hyrule Castle is under attack, she dons a green outfit like the legendary Link and takes off to join the fight.

Whether she is related to Link or not is still unknown, but she does prove herself to be a valiant hero in her own right who would be a fun character to play in a full adventure. Of course, she also has a horrible sense of direction, despite having a massive compass hanging from her neck, and gets lost a lot. But that all adds to her charm, right?

Rauru Could Provide An Adventure In Hyrule's History

The First King Of Hyrule

 Tears of the Kingdom.

The history of Hyrule is often told in little bits and pieces across the games, and sometimes that history gets a bit convoluted with various timelines. In BOTW and more especially in TOTK we are introduced to the First King of Hyrule, Rauru, and spend some time back in history with Princess Zelda's experiences with him.

He is shown to be an intelligent and powerful character, with impressive magic and an even more impressive heart. What better way to show the true background of the Kingdom of Hyrule than in a game told through the eyes of its first king?

Midna And The Twilight Realm

So Many Possibilities In This Alternate World

Midna in Twilight Princess close up shot of face smiling

Anyone who has played Zelda: Twilight Princess is familiar with Midna, the Twilight Princess and Leader of the Twili people. Although she appears in imp form for most of the game, she is actually a beautiful dark princess with magical powers back in her homeland in the Twilight Realm. Her character is such a beloved one from the series; despite only appearing in one title, it would be wonderful to see more of her.

The story of Twilight Princess is certainly a key portion of her tale, but what about life back in the Twilight Realm? What was she like before the mirror shattered? What happened after the events that took place in the game? There is so much that can be explored here, and the setting of the Twilight Realm could provide a much darker approach to a Legend of Zelda game than we typically experience.

Hudson's Construction Company

Puzzle Games To Build Up The Kingdom

 Tears of the Kingdom.

After working for Bolson Construction in BOTW, Hudson went on to create his own construction company, Hudson Construction, in TOTK. He has a Gerudo wife and daughter and is a hardworking and quiet man who appears several times throughout both of those games. The familiarity of having a character like Hudson and his construction company feels as though it's just asking for a puzzle or building spin-off game.

In TOTK, we get to solve a couple of small physics-based puzzles where one of the employees, Addison, needs help with putting up signs for Hudson's Construction around Hyrule.

Hyrule has faced such disasters that there are plenty of communities needing to be rebuilt and strengthened. Why not have a city-building, puzzle game where we play as Hudson, trying to manage finances while rebuilding these lands we all know and love? Perhaps even working on Hyrule Castle!

Tetra's Pirating Adventures

Sailing Hyrule's Seas Looking For Loot To Plunder Could Be Fun!

Link and Tetra from Wind Waker.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is one of my favorite games in the series, and that's at least in part due to the sassy young pirate captain, Tetra. Although her true identity is revealed during the game, this impressive girl clearly had many adventures prior to meeting up with Link.

Following in her mother's footsteps, young Miss Tetra has become a bossy and well-respected pirate captain with a crew of swabbies who will do her bidding. When Link meets up with Tetra in The Wind Waker, she and her crew are searching the Great Sea for a legendary treasure.

A spin-off game featuring Tetra and her crew looking for treasures, plundering from monsters, and sailing the seas as pirates would simultaneously be a unique experience for the Zelda series and fit in perfectly with the world and lore.

Impa's Lore In The Zelda Universe Is Already So Deep

We Need A Game To Explore Her Life

 Breath of the Wild.

Impa has appeared in nearly every game in The Legend of Zelda series, even the very first game in 1986. Whether depicted as a Sheikah bodyguard, a nursemaid, an oracle, or simply an old woman, she has held many important roles in Zelda's life.

Whether it is, in fact, all one character or there are many Impa's across the timelines and games who help the Princess, either way this is a fascinating character. She is often shown to be a skilled warrior and has significant knowledge of the inner workings of Hyrule's ruling family. A look into Impa's life could be an intriguing adventure on its own, perhaps showing times when she's saved Zelda from harm.

Beedle's Adventures To Restock His Store

Surely He Has A Double Life

Link talking to Beedle outside of a little shack in Tears of the Kingdom.

Everyone's favorite traveling merchant, Beedle, has long been a familiar face in Hyrule. Providing Link with all sorts of useful items from bait to heart containers. He seems to always be on the move, and occasionally will comment about how he picked up his items or stumbled across them.

Surely Beedle didn't just trip over a heart container in the road. This suggests a type of double life that could provide an excellent backdrop for a spin-off game, with Beedle working to find items similar to games like Moonlighter or Cuisineer. After all, Beedle is already so beloved by fans of The Legend of Zelda, I think many of us would much rather have a game about him than Tingle.
