If there's a superhero that gets extremely lucky when it comes to video games, it's Marvel's very own Web-Slinger, Spider-Man. The Wall-Crawler has been present in the video game space since all the way back in 1982 in a game simply titled Spider-Man, made for the Atari 2600.
Spider-Man is a huge escape for fans, with the idea of crawling walls and web-swinging across the city being such an immersive fantasy. So, when they're given the chance to do just that, via their favorite video game systems, it's certain to be a hit (most of the time, that is). Whether it's an open-world adventure or a linear-leveled story, the best Spider-Man games are always a good time in one way or another.
9 'Spider-Man: Edge of Time' (2011)
Image via BeenoxWhile it initially didn't get as much love as it has now—due to being a spiritual successor to the ever-popular Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions—Spider-Man: Edge of Time is a really enjoyable game and really underrated. Compared to its predecessor, it's not as strong, but, all in all, this story of Spider-Men of past and future is so entertaining. It's got a very similar play style to Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, but the story is vastly different.
Spider-Man: Edge of Time opens with the shocking death of Peter Parker (Josh Keaton), the present-day iteration of Spidey. It's soon revealed to be a flash-forward to later in the playthrough and adds a sense of tension as audiences wonder if there's anything they'll be able to do to stop it. The connection between Peter Parker and Miguel O'Hara (Christopher Daniel Barnes)—2099's Wall-Crawler—leads to some great writing, and the way that the past can affect the future is wildly fun.
8 'Ultimate Spider-Man' (2005)
Image via ActivisionOne of the most popular things Marvel Comics did back in the early 2000s was kick off the ever-beloved Ultimate Marvel Universe. There's zero question, though, that the Ultimate Spider-Man (2000) comic was easily the best of the bunch and the most well-received. So praised was it, in fact, that it eventually got a video game adaptation of the "Venom" story arc in 2005's Ultimate Spider-Man.
Of all the Spider-Man video games, Ultimate Spider-Man takes the most pride in being based on a comic book. With the cutscenes being framed exactly like moving comic panels, this game absolutely spills over the rim with style. The gameplay is fun, giving people the chance to play not only as Spider-Man (Sean Marquette), but Venom (Arthur Burghardt), as well. Venom has a completely different playing style that is super unique and, honestly, just as enjoyable as the Wall-Crawler's.
7 'Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions' (2010)
Image via ActivisionBefore the Spider-Verse concept was as popular as it is today, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions hit major consoles in 2010 and brought players into control of four different Spider-Men. They got the chance to bring the iconic Amazing Spider-Man (Neil Patrick Harris), Spider-Man 2099 (Dan Gilvezan), Ultimate Spider-Man (Josh Keaton), and Spider-Man Noir (Christopher Daniel Barnes) to life. The game's multiple universes have their own visual style that adds loads of flair.
Each Spidey has their own distinct play style, keeping them all feeling special. The real highlight, however, is that each level explores a corner of each hero's universe, and their special iteration of iconic Spider-Man villains. This allows fans to not only play as four Web-Slingers, but they also get to face off against a plethora of iconic foes from the characters' mythos. In fact, it is the first appearance outside of the comics of a female Doctor Octopus—known as Doctor Octopus 2099 (Tara Strong) in this project—who would become far more well-known due to her inclusion in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
6 'Marvel's Spider-Man 2' (2023)
Image via Sony Interactive EntertainmentThe release of Marvel's Spider-Man changed everything when it came out in 2018. It redefined everything that makes a Spider-Man game good, and showed audiences just how amazing a Spidey game can be if done right. So, everyone was patiently waiting for the big sequel in 2023, Marvel's Spider-Man 2. While not as great as the first outing (which was always going to be hard), this sequel is such a fun game.
While the story doesn't have as much strength as Marvel's Spider-Man, there's no doubt that the gameplay in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is some of the best in any Spidey game ever made. It improves upon everything technically from the original about tenfold, and that makes this such a ride to play through, despite how much better it could have been on the story front. A lot of that can also be blamed on the content cut from the story. So, it was originally supposed to be something more.
5 'Spider-Man: Miles Morales' (2020)
Image via Sony Interactive EntertainmentWhen young Miles Morales (Nadji Jeter) got bitten by a spider towards the end of Marvel's Spider-Man, pretty much nobody expected him to get a spinoff of his own. Not only that, but no one expected it to be as dang good as it ended up being. It's often argued that the game mechanics in Spider-Man: Miles Morales are better than Marvel's Spider-Man and Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
When Peter Parker (Yuri Lowenthal) takes a trip overseas to visit Mary Jane Watson (Laura Bailey), Miles is left on his own to be the one and only Spider-Man of New York City. At the same time, a person from his past emerges, suspiciously at the same time as a new villain in the city. The new combat system in Spider-Man: Miles Morales is genuinely a boatload of fun that made people wish that this game's shorter runtime was closer to the likes of the prior one.
4 'Spider-Man' (2000)
Image voa NeversoftSpeaking of Spider-Man game stories, the one found in Spider-Man is ever-beloved. The nostalgia is real when it comes to 2000's Spider-Man video game, released on PlayStation, Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Windows PC, and Game Boy Color. This nostalgia is for a very good reason, as this instant classic has awesome gameplay, connection to comic mythos, '90s charm, and both accuracy and passion for the character.
Chad Findley and Jeff Stevenson helmed the plot, and they did just a great job with the writing for every character, weaving a plot that is fast-paced in the best ways, includes as many Spidey villains as possible without being cluttered, and wrote a finale that is absurdly original. No, really, Doctor Octopus (Efrem Zimbalist Jr.) fuses with the Carnage (Dee Bradley Baker) symbiote and becomes Monster-Ock. This twist isn't just an adaptation of a comic story; it's one that can claim itself as its very own.
3 'Spider-Man 2' (2004)
Image via ActivisionThe tie-in game for Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 is commonly known as one of the best superhero projects ever made. Also called Spider-Man 2, the game does the same thing as the 2002 movie tie-in game by adapting the movie story in a looser way that allows for the inclusion of other subplots. It doesn't just feature Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina) as the main villain, but also Mysterio (James Arnold Taylor), Shocker (Michael Beattie), and Rhino (John DiMaggio). Black Cat (Holly Fields) is also integral in the plot, acting as a confidant for Peter with his many girl troubles.
Notably, Spider-Man 2 has some of the best gameplay mechanics out there, the web-swinging being the major highlight. People still claim, to this day, that the web-swinging in this game is the best there is, and has yet to be beaten. The physics-based mechanics are everything fans always wanted from their escape into the world of Spider-Man, and it's kept the game memorable even over 20 years later.

- You understand that responsibility isn't a burden you choose — it's one that finds you.

- You use every tool available — your mind, your body, your faith — to protect those the system overlooks.

- You build, you plan, and when the moment comes, you're willing to give everything. Because in the end, you're Iron Man.

🛡️ Captain America
You believe in something bigger than yourself — and you fight for it even when the world has moved on and nobody else will.
- You don't bully the small guy, and you never stop when it gets hard.
- Steve Rogers didn't become a hero when he got the serum — he was always one. So were you.
- Your strength isn't in your fists; it's in your refusal to compromise what's right, no matter the cost.
- In a world full of people taking the easy road, you're the one who picks up the shield and stands up — every single time.
↻ RETAKE THE QUIZ
2 'Spider-Man: Web of Shadows' (2008)
Image via TreyarchIf Spider-Man 2 and Marvel's Spider-Man are the pinnacle of web-swinging mechanics in Spider-Man games, then Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is the pinnacle of combat mechanics. On top of that, plenty would argue that this 2008 spectacle has one of the best stories in Spider-Man gaming, bar none—especially since it gives players the option to have a couple different endings, depending on if they pick a darker story route or a heroic one.
With different endings to the story, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows features many characters, plot lines, and some amazing sequences. Whether Symbiote Spidey rips Wolverine in half, or he fights Vulture atop a skyscraper roof, this game is filled to the brim with zealous displays. Everyone looks back on this entry in the Web-Crawler's gaming catalog with a lot of love.
1 'Marvel's Spider-Man' (2018)
Image via Sony Interactive EntertainmentAs previously stated, when Marvel's Spider-Man released, it changed everything and took the world by storm. The performances across the board by the likes of Yuri Lowenthal, Laura Bailey, Tara Platt, William Salyers, and so many more extremely talented voices are great. The web-swinging in this game is commonly hailed as the biggest competitor to, and even sometimes better than, the legendary Spider-Man 2.
The story behind Marvel's Spider-Man is quite good, as well. The entire team at Insomniac Games gave their all to ensure that this seminal project was going to be the best Spider-Man experience out there, and they pretty much succeeded all around the board. It's hard to deny the inherent quality that makes up this game, and that's why it's Spider-Man's crowning achievement and one of the all-time best superhero efforts out there.
