Dark fantasy anime has that element of horror that captivates viewers, the knowledge that at any moment a terrible creature capable of unleashing the most horrific atrocities imaginable could appear.

After all, the real world is meant to be lived in peace and harmony with everyone, but there's no limit to animation, and that's what allows viewers to dive into horrible worlds to experience unforgettable stories. Thankfully, the 2020s brought many great dark fantasy anime that earned their place as standard-bearers of the genre.

Shadows House

Shadows house anime

Shadows House is all about secrets, and although it didn't achieve the same level of recognition as The Promised Neverland, it has a similar style, where children live together in a mysterious mansion. In Shadows House, the living dolls must attend to their master and practice until they become his likenesses.

While it might start a little slow and the anime doesn't feature blood or violence, it does have dark undertones that reveal the truth behind the living dolls. The greatest charm of Shadows House lies in its characters, who feel realistic and undergo growth and are easy to connect with, and the story is intriguing throughout, making you want them to uncover the nature of the dark system that controls them.

The Case Study of Vanitas

The Case Study of Vanitas

The strongest point of The Case Study of Vanitas is that it departs from the standard Japanese setting for a European world in the early 20th century, with Victorian and steampunk touches with hints of Bram Stoker's Dracula that make it a delight to watch. Although the series is full of humor, it has shifts, and the tone becomes drastic, turning bloody and twisting towards the end of the first chapter to show the tragedy of the characters.

The Case Study of Vanitas has spectacular fights, and each character possesses some superhuman power or strength, with Vanitas becoming the epitome of a brave, determined, yet manipulative and unscrupulous protagonist. Although it might not be for everyone, The Case Study of Vanitas, like any good vampire series, is not afraid to be too bloody, with incredibly devastating backstories and a well-crafted story in its two seasons.

Sentenced to Be a Hero

Xylo in Sentenced To be a Hero episode 1

With a post-apocalyptic world where criminals are stripped of their human rights to become immortal warriors and thrown at the front line against human-eviscerating demonic creatures, Sentenced To Be a Hero became one of the best anime of Winter 2026. Under a corrupt societal structure in Sentenced To Be a Hero, Xylo Forbartz commands a squad of "heroes" who are subjected to mistreatment and humiliation and sent to die constantly. Yet the worst part is that with every death they end up losing pieces of themselves.

Sentenced To Be a Hero's first episode is a visual spectacle, and the series maintains its high level throughout with explosive battles and a story that gradually develops Xylo's past and his relationship with the goddess and their comrades. Sentenced To Be a Hero also features mind-blowing twists, unveiling the true nature of higher institutions and leaving viewers wanting to discover more about the chains that control this cruel system.

Clevatess

Clevatess

Although it didn't achieve great popularity in 2025, Clevatess delivered thrills, unique characters, and an unconventional story where the line between saviors and monsters isn't quite clear. In the anime, the Lords of Dark Beasts brutally and mercilessly kill the heroes one after another, ending in the destruction of a kingdom. However, he has a change of heart, sparing a humanoid baby and getting entangled in a weird and complex dynamic with a resurrected hero.

Clevatess got painful scenes to watch, with the hero, Alicia, getting her arm blown off, her stomach cut open, and showcasing massacres. Yet the anime is a full-fledged high fantasy featuring various races like dwarves, orcs, and sea people and with solid world-building that keeps the story engrossing and is perfect for fans of series like Berserk.

Gachiakuta

Rudo using his Vital Instrument

Gachiakuta managed to reach the top in 2025 with its high-tier animation quality and raw aesthetic, establishing its dark tone from the outset with a full-on critique of systemic class struggles and discrimination. The series follows Rudo, who, after losing his father, is condemned to be thrown into the abyss, discovering a dystopian environment in the purest Mad Max style, where he must fight mutant trash beasts to survive, and human trafficking is a lucrative business.

The anime shines especially for its power system based on the value of discarded things and for having an organization where everyone feels like family. However, Gachiakuta tackles heavy themes with character backstories showing abuse and trauma. Gachikuta also has plenty of lighthearted moments and bombastic fights, making it a must-watch dark fantasy.

Hell’s Paradise

Hell's Paradise Gabimaru and Sagiri

Hell's Paradise is the least known member of Shōnen Jump's dark trio, but that doesn't make it any less recommendable. Unlike Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man, Hell's Paradise isn't an urban fantasy. Set in the Edo period, it follows a group of death row inmates and their executioners who are sent to a mysterious island from which almost no one has returned in search of an elixir of immortality.

While Shinsenkyo has a rather horrifying ecosystem and a haunting atmosphere, the island is teeming with dangerous monsters. Humans are also at the mercy of suffering unnatural mutations, resulting in a duality of beauty and horror. This battle royale features many violent fights and brutal deaths as the mysteries of the island are slowly unraveled. Hell's Paradise also explores identity, spirituality, redemption, and even love, everything clouded with a touch of darkness, which demonstrates the anime has much to offer.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu kaisen Right and Wrong Part 3 Yuji Defeated

Although it may seem like a typical battle anime and its first episodes seem quite calm, as it introduces its villains, Jujutsu Kaisen gradually delves into darker storylines where death, existential angst, and massacres become commonplace.

Jujutsu Kaisen not only boasts a brutal storyline where tension constantly rises and eliminating its characters is a frequent necessity, but it has also gained fans worldwide thanks to its anime characters who embody strength, its breathtaking battles, and animation that showcases the medium's full potential. Therefore, Jujutsu Kaisen more than fulfills its purpose as a dark fantasy and stands as an exceptional anime of the last decade.

Chainsaw Man

Denji in his Chainsaw Man form with his shirt open and covered in blood.

Chainsaw Man might be the bloodiest shōnen anime ever, filled with splatter and an overwhelming amount of gore, as even the protagonist bleeds severely every time he uses his devil powers. However, the series is also a brilliant deconstruction of the genre, with biting social satire and cynical humor that keeps it from feeling too heavy.

Chainsaw Man follows Denji, a poor teenager who, after making a contract with his devil pet and becoming a hybrid, is forced to join Public Safety, an organization that hunts these beings. From public terror and authoritarian control to sexuality and a terrible worldview, Chainsaw Man is not only a delight to watch but is essentially all about Denji's pursuit of happiness, making it one of the most original anime of recent years.

Lord of Mysteries

Klein Moretti in Lord of Mysteries donghua

lthough it's a donghua, Lord of Mysteries is the perfect definition of dark fantasy. Based on a light novel, Lord of Mysteries has achieved legendary status with one of the most complex power systems in fiction, based on sequences that lead to the attainment of godlike abilities. The series follows Klein Moretti, who is transmuted into a world filled with malevolent deities and hidden factions vying for power.

As Klein joins the Nighthawks, a division takes on surveilling the city and neutralizing rogues. Beyonders, the series isn't short on some pretty gruesome confrontations and tragic scenes when these powers spiral out of control. Lord of Mysteries also has plenty of cosmic horror that will leave viewers wanting to finish the story in one sitting.

Dorohedoro

Caiman

Dorohedoro has earned its place as one of the most brutal and gloriously weird new-gen anime. While not overly macabre or sinister, it manages to portray a society rotten to the core with abundant humor and satire, featuring magical battles and where mutilation and death occur daily without anyone batting an eye.

The series combines mysterious factions with Caiman's search for identity. His head was replaced with that of an alligator, and he has no idea who did it. As more details about him are revealed, there isn't a single dull moment thanks to Caiman and Nikaido's antics. With plenty of gore and a murky atmosphere that can shift tone at any moment, Dorohedoro is one of the best choices for those seeking a perfect balance between violence and entertainment.
