Since its launch back in 1998, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has cemented itself as one of the best and most influential video games of all time. Released as the first Zelda game to feature 3D graphics, Ocarina of Time launched on the Nintendo 64 and tasked players with sending Link to Hyrule to deal with the tyrannical rule of Ganondorf once and for all. Armed with his trusty ocarina, Link is able to play various music to progress through levels, making Ocarina of Time famous for its soundtrack.

Although The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time received an enhanced version, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time HD, back in 2011, it is still yet to receive an official modern-day remaster or remake, with the game only being available to play on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 as part of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription service and, even this, this is only its Nintendo 64 version.

With many leaks and rumors suggesting that an announcement for a The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time will arrive later this year, fans are holding out hope that the Zelda classic will deserve the modern-day makeover it deserves. For now, however, we can take a look at a YouTube Short from creator CryZENx, who has managed to give us a glimpse at what a modern-day remake could actually look like by showcasing a comparison video of Link playing the Ocarina against the Nintendo 64 version.

In the Short, we can see a comparison between Link in 1998's Ocarina of Time compared to what the game could look like in 2026 thanks to CryZENx's Unreal Engine makeover. It really is a stark reminder of how far technology has come in the past few decades, and fans took the opportunity to share their thoughts on the beloved game, and what an official remake would mean to them.

"Almost 30 years later and he’s still got it," one user commented. Another said, "I am lucky enough to have experienced the original looking like the 2026 version in my head and to my 16-year-old eyes at the time of release," which seems to be a common sentiment. Another hoped that an official remake would manage this level of perfection, saying, "Can you imagine if we got an OoT remake that looked this good? With real and proper hand motions on the ocarina and everything? Holy s*it..."

Although CryZENx's version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is just an unofficial look at a potential remaster or remake, it does give us an idea of just what is possible for Nintendo with today's technology and hardware. Hopefully, it is projects like this that will inspire that long-awaited announcement.
