Capture has boarded worldwide sales on “The Upside of Unrequited” and released a first look image of the new YA romantic comedy, based on the bestselling novel by Becky Albertalli, the acclaimed author behind “Love, Simon.”
Currently in post-production, “The Upside of Unrequited” is part of the globally beloved “Simonverse,” which has already been successfully adapted across both film and television, including the hit series “Love, Victor.” The franchise was launched by “Love, Simon,” which grossed over $60 million at the global box office.
Directed by the filmmaking duo know as the Shakespeare Sisters (“Soundtrack to Sixteen”), the film follows 17-year-old Molly, a serial romantic who has always been defined by her 26 unrequited crushes — safely contained, intensely felt, and never acted on. But when her twin sister Cassie falls in love, their close-knit world begins to shift and Molly is forced to confront what it means to grow up when everyone around her seems to be moving on.
“The Upside of Unrequited” is described as blending “humor, heart, and a fresh, inclusive perspective — with a thoughtful exploration of body image and self-worth” and being a “coming-of-age story about first love, identity, and the messy, exhilarating process of growing up.”
The young ensemble is led by newcomer Ayvan Williams alongside Siena Agudong (“Sidelined: The QB and Me,” “The 4:30 Movie,” upcoming “Carrie” series) and Luke Eisner (“Tall Girl,” upcoming “Baywatch”), joined by Jessica Belkin (“American Horror Story,” upcoming “Baywatch,” upcoming “Legally Blonde” series “Elle”), Tovah Feldshuh (“Nobody Wants This,” “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” “Armageddon Time”), and Savannah Lee Smith (“Gossip Girl: Next Generation,” “Cruel Intentions”).
Capture will handle worldwide sales and introduce the project to buyers at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.
“We’re proud to be representing ‘The Upside of Unrequited,’ an exceptional YA romantic comedy that pairs a proven IP with a distinctive, authentic voice primed to resonate with global audiences,” said Ella Field, EVP of international sales at Capture. “Bolstered by a breakout cast and a highly engaged fanbase, The Upside of Unrequited is strongly positioned to generate significant international interest.”
Added directors Hillary and Anna Shakespeare: “We’re thrilled to be working with Capture on this! They clearly understand the love that’s out there for the book and just like us want to bring the movie to its core fanbase and beyond.”
