Wolverine just brought a new mutant hero into X-Men lore, and their powers take Mystique's mutant ability and dial it up to god level.
Wolverine's New Trainee Deepfake Has the Ultimate Version of Mystique's Powers
In today's Wolverine #15 - from Saladin Ahmed, Mike Henderson, Jesus Aburtov and Cory Petit - Logan begins training the group of renegade mutants known as the New Morlocks. In the process, fans see the power of 'Deepfake' - a powerful mutant whose potent abilities were teased last issue.
It turns out that Deepfake's powers allow her to manifest an energy duplicate of her target including their mutant powers. While iconic shapeshifter Mystique has long been able to adopt the appearances of her rivals on the X-Men, she can't wield their powers as her own. In contrast, Deepfake can seemingly duplicate any mutant and turn their mutant twin against them.
During the training, Deepfake creates an energy duplicate of her ally Chowdown, which begins absorbing him using his own powers. After this show of force, fans can't help but wonder how powerful Deepfake could become if confronted by powerhouses like the Phoenix, Magneto or Legion.
Our Take on X-Men's Powerful New Mutant
X-Men's new era has introduced some incredibly powerful new mutants, but Deepfake's powers have more promise than most. Given the number of ultra-powerful mutants that exist in Marvel lore, Deepfake may be one of the most powerful mutants to ever live if she can duplicate their abilities to her own ends. The only drawback is that her powers quickly exhaust her.
However, this has been true of pretty much every powerful mutant at one point or another, with the X-Men's training taking them from neophytes who can't control or manage their powers to world-class heroes who can unleash the impossible without breaking a sweat.
As Wolverine continues training Deepfake in the use of her powers, X-Men has seemingly gained a historic powerhouse - and one whose abilities fans can't wait to see tested by the franchise's most powerful antagonists.
Wolverine #15 is available now from Marvel Comics.
