Jared is a writer, editor, and Communications Studies graduate who loves popular nerd culture (almost anything to do with Marvel, DC, Star Wars, or The Lord of the Rings) and the interactive storytelling medium. Jared's first console was the PS1, wherein he fell for Spider-Man, Spyro the Dragon, and Crash Bandicoot.

A rising tide lifts all boats, and plenty of iconic superhero characters, including Absolute Wonder Woman’s Diana of Themyscira, are currently surfing the Absolute DC publishing line’s tsunami. Like with Absolute Batman or Absolute Superman, it is exciting to leaf through each subsequent issue and witness interesting new character redesigns, or see how the protagonist is being challenged within the unique contextual circumstances of their particular Absolute lore.

It’d be an ice-cold take to claim that Absolute Wonder Woman has eclipsed Wonder Woman’s mainline counterpart, and the Elseworlds book’s sales are a validating bit of evidence to support that. Just last week, even, the release of Absolute Wonder Woman #20 (part five of five for the “Season of the Witch” arc) has proved that the ongoing run is fully capable of besting DC and Marvel’s comic giants.

Absolute Wonder Woman Is A Major DC Hit

As per the weekly best-selling comics charts provided by Bleeding Cool, Absolute Wonder Woman #20 soared to the top of the list, though it’s been a tight race with Batman #163 (the conclusion to H2SH Part One) coming in at a close second. To be fair, this is not the first time Wonder Woman has dominated weekly sales charts; for instance, Absolute Wonder Woman #17 was the best-selling comic of the final week of February.

Plus, Absolute Wonder Woman #18 and #19 recently came in second place in their respective weeks/months, both times ironically being beaten by none other than the epic and momentous DC/Marvel: Superman/Spider-Man #1 and Marvel/DC: Spider-Man/Superman #1. Either way, it is great to see how much love readers are expressing for Absolute Wonder Woman and every other Absolute book.

In general, Wonder Woman as a character tends to chart quite high, seeing as she also came in third place in the first week of May, tangentially, via the Batman/Wonder Woman: Truth one-shot.

Absolute Wonder Woman Deserves It And More

Anything related to Batman or Spider-Man will reliably crest any sales charts, but it is phenomenal to see that Wonder Woman can routinely ascend to those same heights. In Absolute Wonder Woman’s case, the book’s success can be attributed to three traits: firstly, Wonder Woman’s undeniable popularity and significance as one of the three pivotal characters in the DC holy trinity; secondly, how terrific Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman’s Absolute Wonder Woman run has been; and thirdly, how fascinating the Absolute DC universe has been for all characters who’ve been treated to a series (or supporting role within another character’s book) thus far.

The Absolute universe has earned its popularity. Therefore, it is not surprising in the slightest that Absolute Green Arrow’s debut issue was the best-selling comic of its respective launch week as well, according to Bleeding Cool. And, of course, anything new and highly anticipated, such as Stephanie Phillips and Lee Garbett’s ongoing Daredevil run, will make its way onto bestseller lists fairly easily (hence why issue #1 relaunches are so ubiquitous).

Absolute Wonder Woman’s narrative is at a crucial turning point as of issue #20, leaving Diana stuck in the Wild Isle of Hell for a month while Barbara Minerva, who is likely to become Cheetah quite soon, is imprisoned and helpless in Veronica Cale’s Area 41. Absolute Wonder Woman issues releasing monthly means that it won’t be a bestseller every week, obviously, but it is always neat to see how high it will land when a new issue does release.

Wonder Woman #20 is out now.
