Disney+ has a hit on its hands, as Wonder Man tops the charts around the world. However, the show's seemingly feel-good ending is hiding a twist that's way darker than Marvel usually goes.
What Happens in Wonder Man's Ending?
In the series' final episode, 'Yucca Valley', Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) deals with the consequences of losing his powers, and his impending arrest by the Department of Damage Control. However, Simon is saved when friend and mentor Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley) takes the blame for the resulting explosion, using his former role as terrorist leader the Mandarin to mislead the public.
Simon gets to complete Wonder Man while Trevor is hauled off to prison, giving an amazing performance and living out his dream. When Simon is offered the opportunity to pick his next project, fans see him shadowing prison guard Chuck Eastman.
It turns out that Simon isn't following Chuck for a role, but to get close enough to break Trevor out of prison, with the two subsequently going on the run. Just as Trevor sacrificed himself for Simon, Simon sacrifices his career for Trevor - their future uncertain, but the two close friends back together and free.
In a sweet added detail, Simon leaves Chuck enough money to quit his job while supporting his family, freeing him from the stress of working in the DoDC's prison. There's just one problem...
Wonder Man's Chuck Eastman Is Going to Jail
While Simon Williams' gift to Chuck is a sweet gesture, he just ruined the poor guy's life. Chuck is already in huge trouble when the
episode ends. He actively lied to his superiors in order to sneak an unapproved person into the prison, facilitating a prison break. Chuck absolutely committed a serious crime, even though he didn't know Simon's true motives.
However, Simon's gift is going to make it look like Chuck knew exactly what he was doing. No court in America is going to believe that Simon wasn't paying off Chuck for his part in the jailbreak, especially given how huge the amount was. Worse, as far as the public is concerned, Simon didn't just break out a regular criminal - he freed a terrorist leader who directly threatened the president.
Maybe the DoDC will look kindly on Chuck? Not if everything we've seen from Arian Moayed's Agent P. Cleary is taken into account. The DoDC is clearly under immense pressure to keep its budget, and Cleary pursues his job with a desperate callousness to anyone who gets in his way.
If anything, the DoDC is going to want to make an example of poor Chuck Eastman to protect its reputation.
Hopefully, Marvel Undoes Wonder Man's Dark Twist
Of course, the MCU doesn't have to follow through with Chuck Eastman going to prison for the rest of his life. However, to dispel this dark implication, either Wonder Man or another show needs to confirm that Chuck got away with his actions.
Any even halfway competent investigation into Simon's jailbreak is going to reveal both Chuck's lies and the fact he just came into a fortune - it would take a miracle to keep him free and with his family (who we meet, to twist the knife even harder.) Because of that, fans need to see something to the contrary before they can really believe Chuck goes free.
Let us know below how you think Marvel can clear up Wonder Man's dark twist, and whether the MCU has ever done anything as dark as a regular guy going to prison for accidentally helping two best buddies reconnect.
