Image via ABCIn its seven episodes so far, Will Trent Season 4 has been focusing on the theme of adjusting to change. Will (Ramón Rodríguez) has been struggling to adapt to having a family, watching Angie (Erika Christensen) build her own family, and processing the comparisons James Ulster (Greg Germann) made between the two of them before his death. Amanda (Sonja Sohn) and Ormewood (Jake McLaughlin) have been coming to terms with how their major health scares have been continuing to affect their lives and their jobs even after recovering.
Meanwhile, Faith (Iantha Richardson) just went through a major heartbreak, and Angie is about to become a mother. As all of these characters move forward in their lives, it's exciting to see them enter these new chapters. That said, it's hard for them to let go of their pasts — Will and Angie most of all. As the two start to move forward, Will Trent continues to show that the two still have feelings for each other, but it would be a mistake for Will Trent to bring Will and Angie back together.
'Will Trent's Will and Angie Stifle Each Other's Growth
From the very beginning of Will Trent, the show always made it clear that the very thing drawing Will and Angie to each other was the reason why their relationship could never last. Despite never being able to quit each other, Will and Angie have always held each other back. In Season 1, he asked her to open up about her trauma to a witness to get her talking, even knowing what this would do to Angie. In Season 2, when Will connected with his uncle, Antonio (John Ortiz) and his extended family, he would regress and doubt himself whenever he was around Angie. They may have broken up because he arrested her, but there were always cracks in their relationship.
Most recently, in Season 4, Will has been struggling with seeing Angie move forward with Seth. While helping her write her vows in the season's sixth episode, Will reminisces by bringing up the worst moments of Angie's addiction. Will doesn't mean to be harsh, it's just that all of their good memories together are tainted by the bad times. In just one season apart from Will, Angie was able to meet someone else and start a family, as well as prove herself again at the APD. Will has certainly been struggling a lot more to let go of their relationship than she has, but he too has forged new connections and started therapy since the breakup. Will and Angie have only really ever been able to grow when they're not together, and although they'll always mean something to each other, they need to keep their romantic relationship in the past.
'Will Trent' Should Let Will and Angie Continue To Move Forward Separately
Angie may have just gotten married to Seth (Scott Foley), but Will Trent Season 4 has made it clear that the show's not done with Will and Angie. Even now, Angie continues to choose Will over Seth when he's in danger, admits that she still has feelings for Will, and rushes to marry Seth like she's worried she'll change her mind. Will, meanwhile, has not been able to move on, either. He ended things with Marion (Gina Rodriguez) and turned to Angie for help in Season 3 when he was at his lowest point, and he has only since started a casual fling with Ava (Julia Chan). Will is trying to be supportive of Angie, but it still obviously hurts him whenever he sees her with Seth.

Even as Angie encourages Will to feel the baby through her stomach, it feels a little like a goodbye, but mostly they just can't let each other go. In the season's seventh and most recent episode, Will and Angie's former fellow foster kid, Paul Campano (Mark-Paul Gosselaar), mistakenly believes that the two of them are still together — and that Will is the father of Angie's baby. Both of them are a bit awkward about this, and Will and Angie never properly debrief after this. Even though Angie and Seth are married now, it doesn't bode well for them that Will and Angie have been shown to still have feelings for each other.
Will Trent has been known to kill off main characters before, and Seth could easily be next. Angie and Seth could also wind up separating if he realizes that she's not over Will. Will, on the other hand, has yet to find a love interest who could be for him what Seth is to Angie. His main love interest in the books, Sara Linton, has not yet been introduced in the show. There's a lot that Will Trent can do with Will and Angie's love lives going forward, but it will be best for both characters to keep them apart.
New episodes of Will Trent air Tuesdays at 8:00 P.M. EST on ABC.
