Spider-Man: Brand New Day premiered on July 31, with the fourth Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man film breaking Sam Raimi’s record for the longest-running Spider-Man franchise. As Marvel gears up for some big changes with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, Spider-Man’s role in the franchise’s future remains uncertain. Here’s everything we know about possible plots, potential release dates, and new characters who could join the franchise.

Is Spider-Man 5 confirmed?

No, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, which co-produce the current slate of Spider-Man films, haven’t announced a direct followup to Brand New Day. However, a tiny post-credits sequence revealed that Spider-Man still has a role to play in the MCU.

Where will Spider-Man appear next?

Tom Holland doesn’t appear to be part of the massive cast for Avengers: Doomsday, which means Peter Parker likely won’t return to the MCU until Avengers: Secret Wars, which releases Dec. 17, 2027. The film is an adaptation of the 2015 miniseries by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić, where numerous superheroes, including Spider-Man, are forced to fight each other on a planet dubbed Battleworld. That aligns with the post-credits scene, where the Spidey Tracker app invented by Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) picks up a sighting of Spider-Man on a distant planet.

The characters in Secret Wars come from many different universes, and Marvel is clearly using that idea to connect multiple Earths, including the homes of the Fantastic Four and the X-Men. The comic event introduced the alternate universe Spider-Man Miles Morales, and when the multiverse was reestablished, Miles stuck around and was mentored by Peter Parker. The character has since become extremely popular, helming his own animated trilogy that launched in 2018 with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. However, he has yet to appear in live action.

The MCU will likely use Secret Wars as a way to pass the torch from Peter Parker to Miles Morales. In a recent interview, Tom Holland revealed that succession plans have been in the works for five years. Holland has also said he’d like to bring Morales to the screen and serve as a mentor to him the way Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark did for Peter. Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s producers say there’s still hope that Peter could have one last adventure involving Venom before swinging off into the sunset.

What is the potential release date for Spider-Man 5?

Sony will be releasing Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse on June 18, 2027. An animated Venom movie from Final Destination: Bloodlines directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein is in the works, but still years away. Marvel revealed a full slate of movies releasing through 2029 at San Diego Comic-Con that includes Black Panther 3, Shang-Chi 2, and The Fantastic Four 2, but no new Spider-Man. Four and a half years passed between the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. That means we’ll likely have to wait until 2030 to see Holland fully pass the torch to a new webslinger.
