ASUS Zenbook Duo (2026) Review: Six Months With Intel's Panther Lake in a Two-Screen Body

The ASUS Zenbook Duo is a laptop with two 14-inch OLED screens instead of one, and for six months it has been trying to solve the single thing I hate most about working away from my desk. I have never been able to edit on one screen. At home, there are two big panels in front of me, one for the image and one for everything else, I want the same on the go. 

The unit I have been using is the Core Ultra X9 388H configuration with 32 GB of memory, built on Intel's new Core Ultra Series 3 silicon, the generation known as Panther Lake. I should also declare my bias before we start, because it matters for this particular machine: I am an OLED snob. I notice backlight bleed the way other people notice a dripping faucet. A laptop whose whole identity is two OLED panels was always going to get my attention, and it was always going to have to survive my harshest judgment.

It mostly did. This is a genuinely unusual machine with a genuinely unusual set of compromises. It is also, quietly, one of the first laptops running Intel's new Core Ultra Series 3 silicon, so as much as this is a review of a two-screen laptop, it is a review of Panther Lake in the real world. Here is what six months told me.

The Displays: The Whole Point, and They Are Very Good

The panels are the reason this machine exists, so let me start where I spent most of my attention. These are two 14-inch OLED screens, each running 3K resolution at 144 Hz, both covering 100% of DCI-P3. Sitting in front of them, stacked, you get a tall continuous working surface that feels less like a laptop and more like someone shrank a desk.

For editing, OLED earns its reputation here. True blacks and per-pixel light matter more than people admit when you are judging shadow detail in a raw file, and a shadow that washes out on an IPS laptop because of backlight glow holds together on these panels. Color out of the box was close enough that I trusted it for culling and a first-pass grade without a second thought, which is the highest compliment I give a screen. I preferred editing on these over some full desktop setups I have used.

The two things people worry about with OLED laptops both turned out to be non-issues here. Brightness is genuinely excellent: these panels peak at up to 1,000 nits in HDR, which is very bright, and even the roughly 512-nit SDR level is more than I need, to the point that I do not run them at full brightness indoors. The glossy finish is far better controlled than most shiny screens, so reflections rarely bothered me even with a window behind the desk. The only real limitations are mild ones: automatic brightness limiting means a full-screen white document will not hold the same peak as a small highlight, and these are still laptop panels rather than a reference monitor for final color-critical delivery. For proofing, culling, portfolio review, client-facing work, and the overwhelming majority of my editing, they are better than any laptop screen has a right to be.

The Dual-Screen Workflow: Preview on Top, Hands on the Bottom

The second screen is either the reason you buy the Zenbook Duo or a gimmick you pay for and ignore. For me it was the former, immediately, because it let me rebuild my desk habit anywhere.

In Lightroom, I put the image up top and drop the filmstrip, the develop panel, or a full-screen loupe on the lower screen. In Photoshop the canvas goes up and the layers, histogram, and toolbars go down, so I am not endlessly summoning and dismissing panels over the picture I am trying to judge. For the occasional video job, a timeline on the lower panel and a clean preview up top is a layout I have wanted on a laptop for a decade. The lower screen is not always a second app or window, either. Sometimes the best use of it is simply the same app given room to breathe, tools spread out instead of stacked, and on a plane that alone changed how much I got done.

The magnetic keyboard is the clever hardware trick that makes this work. Lay it over the lower display and you have an ordinary, genuinely good laptop with a real trackpad. Lift it off, set it in front where it runs wirelessly, and the lower screen wakes up as your second monitor. That transition is the entire product, and ASUS has made it fast and reliable enough that I do it without thinking about it.

Size, Weight, and Portability

The pitch is a desk in a bag. At about 1.65 kg (3.64 lbs) with the keyboard, the Zenbook Duo weighs a little more than a conventional 14-inch thin-and-light, which is the physical cost of a second screen. That being said, 3.6 lbs is not heavy, and in practice, it has never felt like a burden. It is a machine you throw in a backpack without a second thought, and after six months, the weight simply is not something I think about.

What I kept noticing was the trade in my favor. I used to carry a light laptop and quietly resent it the moment I started editing. Now I carry something a little heavier and get my two-monitor workspace wherever I open it. For how I actually work, that is a trade I would make every single time.

The Intel Core Ultra Series 3 Chip: Panther Lake in the Wild

If the two screens are why you notice this laptop, the processor is what I was really living with, because this is one of the first machines built on Intel's Core Ultra Series 3, the generation Intel calls Panther Lake. I care about a laptop's processor the way I care about the plumbing in my house. I want to never think about it, and for six months, I mostly have not, which is some of the best praise I can give.

The chip is the Core Ultra X9 388H, the 16-core flagship of the line. Its compute tile is built on Intel's new 18A process, the company's first real node jump in years, which helps the machine stay fast without getting hot or thirsty for most of a day. The bigger story for anyone who edits, though, is the graphics. The integrated Arc B390 carries 12 of Intel's new Xe3 cores, and integrated graphics have quietly crossed a line here: 4K video editing and export are comfortable rather than aspirational, which simply was not true of most machines a couple of generations ago.

In the work I actually do, it disappears. Raw editing, including AI-assisted masking and denoise, is quick and quiet. Culling a full shoot is instant. Panoramas and layered files that used to make a laptop fan audibly panic are handled without drama. The benchmarks back up the feel: in my own testing, it turned in a Geekbench 7 score of 2,940 single-core and 17,001 multi-core, which is strong for a machine this small and this quiet most of the time. There is also a fast neural engine on board, up to 50 TOPS, enough to certify the Duo as a Copilot+ PC and to drive the growing pile of on-device AI features in Windows.

This is still not a mobile workstation with a discrete GPU, and it does not pretend to be. If your daily work is 8K timelines or enormous focus and panorama stacks, a heavier machine with dedicated graphics will still beat it (and you'll be working at a desk anyway), and under a genuinely sustained export the fans spin up and the chip will push into the high 90s Celsius to hold its clocks. For a working photographer's real mix of raw developing, retouching, and the occasional video edit, though, it never once became the bottleneck. 

Keyboard, Trackpad, and Webcam

The detachable keyboard had every reason to feel like a compromise and mostly does not. Typing on it, laid over the lower screen, is close to a normal Zenbook keyboard, and the trackpad is large and accurate. Detached and used in front of the machine, it stays connected reliably over its wireless link, and I rarely thought about battery or pairing.

The 1080p webcam with IR is a real upgrade over the potato cameras laptops shipped for years, and Windows Hello face unlock is fast enough that I never went back to typing a password. It's really nice to open your laptop and have it log in essentially instantly.

Lay the keyboard back over the lower display and you have an ordinary, genuinely good laptop with a real trackpad. The transition between this and the two-screen mode is the trick that makes the whole thing work.

Connectivity

The port selection is more generous than the thin chassis suggests. Two Thunderbolt 4 ports handle charging, external displays, and fast card offloading, and a full-size HDMI 2.1 output plus a 10 Gbps USB-A port meant I could plug in a monitor and a card reader without an adapter on most days. A 3.5mm combo jack survives for wired headphones and monitoring. Wireless is current-generation Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, and both were rock solid over six months.

The port edge. For a chassis this thin, the selection is generous: two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a full-size USB-A, HDMI 2.1, and a headphone jack, so I rarely reached for a dongle. 

Battery Life

Battery is the honest cost of all that glass, and ASUS clearly knew it, because there is a massive 99 Wh dual-battery design in here. In one-screen laptop mode, running normal editing and browser work, it generally gets me through a work session, and lighter duty stretches into all-day territory. Light both OLED panels at full brightness and edit all day, though, and it drains noticeably faster than the same machine does on a single screen, because you are quite literally running two displays. Generally, I got 8-10 hours on mixed usage, dropping to about 4-5 hours for more power-intensive tasks. 

Thermals and Noise

Under everyday editing the Duo stays cool and effectively silent. Push it hard with a sustained export or a long video render and the fans spin up and the chassis warms, which is exactly what you would expect from this much performance in a body this thin. Even then, the noise is mild rather than the jet-engine whine some laptops produce, and it never got alarming or throttled its way to a crawl in my use.

What I Didn't Like

  • The memory is soldered

The recommendation writes itself. If you are happy on a single screen, do not buy this. You will pay a weight, battery, and price premium for a second display you will not use, and a conventional Zenbook 14 OLED will make you happier for less. But if you are the kind of person who runs two monitors and feels cramped the second you are down to one, who evaluates images critically and cares about the panel in front of you, the Zenbook Duo is close to a revelation. It took the one thing I hated most about working away from my desk and simply deleted it. Six months in, I am still an OLED snob, and these two screens have easily passed the test.
