Will Ferrell s set to return to television with the upcoming comedy series The Hawk, in which he plays fictional golfer Lonnie Hawkins. The series follows Hawkins as he attempts a comeback in the sport that he loves. Scheduled to arrive in summer 2026, The Hawk has unveiled its first promotional footage, offering an early look at Ferrell’s character, complete with an intentionally disastrous golfer’s hairstyle that hints at the eccentric personality audiences can expect. The Hawk is described as follows:

"Lonnie Hawkins, (Will Ferrell) 2004's number one golfer, struggles on the back nine of his career to recapture his magic. His body says retire, but his heart says he's not done yet. His ex-wife and his son Lance, golf's new golden boy, know he's through. But with one more major to win to complete golf's Grand Slam, Lonnie refuses to believe he's anything other than one stroke away from the greatest comeback in golf history."

To mark the announcement, Netflix has released three teaser clips highlighting Ferrell’s portrayal of Hawkins. In one, the character dramatically tosses dust into the air, while another features Hawkins warning an announcer not to mention the time he choked, and more.

The 10-episode series also stars Molly Shannon, Jimmy Tatro, Fortune Feimster, Luke Wilson, Chris Parnell, Katelyn Tarver, and David Hornsby. Jessica Elbaum and Alix Taylor serve as executive producers for Gloria Sanchez Productions, while Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman and Nena Rodrigue executive produce for T-Street. Chris Henchy, Harper Steele, David Gordon Green and Andrew Guest are also attached as executive producers.

Will Ferrell As an Athlete? Comedy Perfection

Ferrell has built much of his career around playing larger-than-life personalities who believe they are legends in their own right. From Ron Burgundy in Anchorman to NASCAR driver Ricky Bobby in Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, the actor has frequently explored comedic takes on larger-than-life figures. He also previously stepped into the sports world with the soccer comedy Kicking & Screaming. In that context, Ferrell's portrayal a supposed golf great in The Hawk feels like a natural extension of his comedic wheelhouse. Based on the brief footage released so far, the series appears well suited to Ferrell’s signature style of sports-adjacent satire — and exactly what his fans have been waiting for.
