The CW's 5-Part Horror Crime Series Is So Good, You Can Rewatch It Over And Over

Although iZombie ended back in 2019, the CW horror series remains one of the genre’s most re-watchable TV shows. There are some truly great horror shows out there, from Shudder’s simply titled anthology Slasher to Netflix’s one-season masterpiece The Haunting of Hill House. However, it is hard to find horror shows that are truly re-watchable.

This arguably makes sense, given the genre’s central selling point. Horror shows are supposed to be scary, so viewers are unlikely to find comfort in a show that truly unsettles them to their core. Compared to sitcoms and even cop shows, which follow a reliable trope-heavy formula, even acclaimed horror shows like Netflix’s Marianne are often too scary to revisit.

iZombie Is One of TV’s Coziest Horror Shows

That’s where classics like Supernatural, The X-Files, and the CW’s criminally underrated procedural iZombie come in. These horror shows blend the comforts of a police procedural with “Monster of the Week” storytelling, meaning each episode works as a standalone story while also providing an endlessly re-watchable serialized story in the background.

Of this list, iZombie is easily the coziest title despite its seemingly gruesome premise. The five-season comic book adaptation stars Rose McIver as Olivia “Liv” Moore, a medical resident who becomes a zombie after an attack by one of the hungry undead. Maintaining her personality but now blessed and cursed with an appetite for brains, Liv uses her new condition to help solve murders.

As an assistant at the King County morgue, she samples the brains of recently deceased murder victims and, in the process, temporarily absorbs their personalities and memories. Thus, Liv, along with her colleague Ravi and her cop accomplice Clive, is able to solve the murders of these victims while also sating Liv’s need to consume brains without killing living people.

iZombie Is A Must-Watch For Horror Comedy Fans

iZombie’s central conceit sounds pretty disgusting on account of its undead heroine and weekly bouts of cannibalism, but the show is a surprisingly light-hearted, goofy procedural that proves more re-watchable than retch-inducing. Future Ghosts star McIver flexes her comedic chops as Liv embodies everyone from a dowager to a dominatrix, depending on each episode’s victim.

Meanwhile, the drama between her colleagues and the overarching story of political elites attempting to control the zombie population ensures that the series has a gripping storyline beneath its standalone, episodic plots. As a result, iZombie stands out as a rare horror show that is not only re-watchable, but downright cozy despite its seemingly brutal premise.
