Sonic remained in the top spot its second week in theaters, pulling in a solid $38 million domestically and a franchise record setting $74 million internationally as the animated/live action adventure opened in theaters around the world.
Wicked: Part One dropped into fourth place with a bounty of $19.45 million. That number helped the film surpass the record set by 2008's Mamma Mia! as the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation in global box office history.
So far, the musical has conjured up $424.2 million domestically and a total of $634.3 globally.
The feel good Mamma Mia! starring Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried earned $144.3 million domestically and more than $611.4 million globally.
Wicked star Ariana Grande shared a post from the social media account Wicked Update which celebrated the news writing, 'Rejoicify! Wicked has surpassed Mamma Mia! to become the highest grossing musical adaption of all time globally!'
