ABC is not airing a new episode of Abbott Elementary season 5 tonight for an important reason. As the network's premier comedy, the Quinta Brunson-created and starring show is an important part of its 2025-2026 TV programming. Much has already happened to the crew of the famed Philadelphia-based school in the year thus far, and there's a promise that there will be more twists and turns to come.

Now, the wait for a brand new Abbott Elementary season 5 episode is going to require the patience of many fans, as ABC officially preempts its run for a while. Starting tonight, February 11, 2026, the broadcaster's Wednesday primetime block will not be its usual programming. Instead, reruns of notable episodes of their scripted shows will be on the air, starting with four back-to-back episode broadcast of selected Shifting Gears season 2 offerings.

Mini-breaks for network TV shows are not unusual at this point in the cycle. They're strategically scheduled to either make sure that projects have enough episodes to last until May, when finale season usually goes down, or to take advantage of the sweeps weeks, which determines ad rates for the rest of the year. This time, however, the disruption is likely to give way to Winter Olympics coverage in Milan. NBC has the rights to the event, but ABC is aware that the focus will be on the games, resulting in their programming's hiatus.

When Abbott Elementary Returns & What To Expect From Season 5, Episode 17

Abbott Elementary season 5's break will last a few weeks, with new episodes not coming out until March 4, 2026. That's a full month of hiatus for the premier comedy. For what it's worth, other shows on the ABC roster have the same schedule, more or less, so it's definitely a network-wide scheduling change. Because of how much time there is still between now and the next outing for Abbott Elementary, ABC has yet to release any kind of detail for the upcoming episode.

Expect that there will also be a dedicated week for rerunning episodes of Abbott Elementary season 5 while the sitcom is currently on a break. It's the perfect time for viewers to catch up on episodes that they may have missed. Otherwise, the complete show is available to stream on Disney+/Hulu.
