Why There Is No New The Rookie Tonight (Sept 21) & When Fresh Episodes Release

Fall TV is back, with various networks premiering new shows and new seasons. One show that is missing from the list is The Rookie, with ABC making it clear that season 9 will not air tonight, Tuesday, September 21.

Monday nights have been a lot of fun with the cop dramedy rounding up the night. The Rookie season 8 left with a major cliffhanger that has everyone theorizing, and now it turns out that there is a longer wait. In some even worse news, The Rookie season 9 won't return in the fall, but this is a blessing in disguise.

Monday nights are all about football in the fall. ABC airs the Monday games from September to January each year, and that is the plan for Fall 2026. While the long summer drought turns into a long fall one as well, there is some good news when it comes to the return of the series. Not only should it bring immediate answers to burning questions, but the series builds momentum since it has no breaks once it does return.

Why There Is No New The Rookie Season 9 Tonight (Sept. 21, 2026)

Having to wait for new episodes of favorite TV shows is disappointing. It's even worse when fall TV starts, and there are no signs of the shows coming back. The summer hiatus is long and hard, especially when there is a major cliffhanger.

While a few ABC shows premiered last week, not everything returned. Dancing with the Stars and RJ Decker made their return, and there are no plans for anything else on the network until October, at the earliest.

Throughout the fall, Monday nights are dedicated to Monday Night Football. Instead of The Rookie, the New York Giants take on the Los Angeles Rams starting at 8:15 p.m. ET/PT tonight, Sept. 21.

When Will New Episodes Of The Rookie Release (& What To Expect)

There is even more bad news when it comes toThe Rookieseason 9's premiere.For the last few years, ABC has opted to hold off on bringing the cop dramedy back in the fall. Instead, new seasons premiere in January, and that's the way it's working for season 9. Everyone has to wait until January 2027 for new episodes.

This wait is excruciating, but it makes sense. The season order is still around 18 episodes, and by bringing the show back in January, the episodes can run without breaks in the schedule. There's no need to take a month off for the winter break or the on-off schedule that takes place from January to May to fill enough weeks with new episodes. Continuity in the storytelling helps to keep the audience's attention, reducing the risk of people forgetting when new episodes air and preventing the viewership from declining too much.

When The Rookie season 9 does return, there is a lot of ground to cover from the season 8 finale. Just as Chenford fans got the proposal of the year, the series did what it does best: ruin the happy moment. A couple walked up to the two on the beach, immediately sedating them. As Tim started to lose consciousness, the woman said, "Everett says hi," connecting the attack to the prisoner's escape earlier in the episode.

While Everett was captured again, it's clear he has some connections on the outside to get revenge, but the premiere needs to answer why Everett wanted revenge against Tim specifically. It's not the first time this series has ended with a cliffhanger that has ruined a happy moment. The end of The Rookie Season 3 left questions about Angela and Wesley's wedding, and the Season 4 premiere brought answers, along with a shocking death. Hopefully, The Rookie season 9 avoids the last part as it quickly delivers answers and a manhunt.

The Rookie Season 9 will premiere in January 2027.
