The Madison director Christina Alexandra Voros addresses why episode 1 is dedicated to Robert Redford.

Created and written by Taylor Sheridan, The Madison is a neo-Western show that follows the wealthy Clyburn family as they move from New York to Montana's Madison River valley after a tragedy. Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell play the respective leading roles of Stacy and Preston Clyburn. The cast also includes Patrick J. Adams, Elle Chapman, and Matthew Fox.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley for The Madison, Voros was asked about the story behind episode 1 being dedicated to the legendary Redford. She explains that Sheridan would need to be asked to get the full story, but that the reason behind the dedication should be clear to anyone who watches the show. Check out her comments below:

Well, you'd have to ask Taylor as to the actual evolution of that, but I think it would be clear to anybody watching the show why honoring Redford, in conjunction with a show such as this one, makes all the sense in the world.

Voros' answer alludes to many of Robert Redford's movies being Westerns, with the actor having heavily shaped the evolution of the genre. He played pivotal roles in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Horse Whisperer, Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here, The Electric Horseman, and Jeremiah Johnson.

More recently, Robert Redford has shaped Westerns as a producer for the hit AMC series Dark Winds. It is a Western noir thriller that focuses on the Navajo police officers Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon), Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon), and Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten). It is now in the midst of releasing new episodes for season 4, has been renewed for season 5, and has a perfect 100% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. Redford had a cameo in the season 3 premiere, which ended up being his final role before he passed away in September 2025.

After Redford defined the Western genre, he helped revitalize it with Dark Winds, as has Sheridan with Yellowstone and its various spinoffs. The Madison is not a Yellowstone spinoff, but it is a modern-day Western from Sheridan, and was renewed for season 2 in August 2025, long before its March 2026 premiere.

In addition to The Madison, Sheridan has another neo-Western currently releasing new episodes on Paramount+, with the Yellowstone sequel Marshals that focuses on Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes). Sheridan has arguably become the modern face of Westerns, a genre that has endured in large part because of Redford's invaluable contributions.

The Madison episodes 1-3 are streaming on Paramount+. Episodes 4-6 will debut on March 21.
