One Piece season 2 introduces Tashigi, a character who looks very similar to Zoro's childhood friend. As outlined in One Piece season 1's ending and throughout season 2, Roronoa Zoro's dream is to become the world's greatest swordsman. One of One Piece season 2's biggest manga changes proved Zoro was still on this path, driven by hallucinations of his season 1 rival, Mihawk.

One Piece season 2's ending provided Zoro with an opportunity to prove himself against King Wapol's mechanical warriors, with more adventures on the way. In One Piece season 3's story, Zoro and the other Straw Hats will seek to liberate Vivi's kingdom of Arabasta from Baroque Works, meaning the former pirate hunter will get plenty of opportunities to sharpen his blade skills.

All of this will be in a bid to fulfill his promise to his childhood friend, Kuina. In One Piece season 1, it was outlined that Zoro and Kuina both vowed to be the best swordsman or woman in the world. After Kuina's sudden, tragic death, Zoro shouldered that burden as a promise to honor her memory.

In season 2, Kuina is mentioned briefly when Zoro bumps into Tashigi, a new member of One Piece's wider cast. Zoro mistakes Tashigi for Kuina due to their similar appearance. This raises the question of why the two look alike and whether there is any deeper meaning behind this.

One Piece's Resemblance Between Tashigi & Kuina Appears To Be A Coincidence

Despite Zoro mistaking Tashigi for Kuina at first, implying a deeper connection between the latter two characters, it appears their resemblance is a coincidence. Netflix's season 2 does not hint at any true meaning for Tashigi sharing Kuina's blue hair and facial features, simply making this a One Piece Easter egg to Zoro's backstory.

Moreover, there is no secret meaning that is yet to be revealed in the live-action show, if the original manga is anything to go by. The One Piece manga is still ongoing today, though it is in its final saga. To this point, over 1000 chapters in, no meaningful connection between Tashigi and Kuina has been revealed.

Therefore, the link between the characters is coincidental, at most. On a narrative and thematic level, Tashigi serves as somewhat of a foil to Zoro. As shown in One Piece season 2, she becomes enamored with his swords and skill, though she feels betrayed upon learning he is part of the Straw Hat Pirates.

One Piece Season 2 Review - Fun, Faithful, & Fixing A Modern TV Issue, One Piece Is Better Than Ever

One Piece season 2 maintains everything that worked about season 1, continuing to prove it is one of modern streaming’s best offerings.

This reveal is what drives Tashigi to become a better swordswoman herself, with the ultimate goal of bringing down Zoro. As such, she is somewhat of an extension of Kuina as a rival to Zoro, only in a different way. Kuina and Zoro's rivalry was a friendly, symbiotic one; as one got better in their dream, so did the other. Tashigi's rivalry with Zoro is more antagonistic.

In this way, a connection can be drawn between Tashigi and Kuina beyond their appearance. Nonetheless, their resemblance has not yet been confirmed as anything deeper, such as the two being secret relatives, for example, rendering it a simple coincidence in One Piece's story.

The One Piece Manga Could Still Reveal A Deeper Reason Behind Tashigi's Appearance

All that said, One Piece could still unveil a connection such as this between Tashigi and Kuina. As alluded to, the manga's final saga is currently ongoing and is expected to last for another few years, at least. Tashigi is still present in the final saga, meaning One Piece has the opportunity to reveal a deeper meaning behind her resemblance to Kuina in the future.

Whether it does so remains to be seen, however. For now, the similarities between Tashigi and Kuina are merely coincidental, something that One Piece season 2 reiterates.
