However, in episode 3, "Merrily We Go," it was time for Sophia to take a big step toward putting down roots in the Township. The decision of where newcomers choose to live has been given a lot of significance in From. When the Matthews family chose whether to live in town or in Colony House, the Township had a ceremony of sorts and gave the moment weight by insisting that their decision would be final.
By the time Sophia was prompted to decide where to live in "Merrily We Go," the many tragic and chaotic recent events had put that level of formality on the back burner, but Kenny still posed the question as a meaningful one. He was firm that remaining at the clinic wasn't an option, and when Sophia responded that she wanted to live with Sara, Kenny's concern reaffirmed that it was not an insignificant decision.
Kenny was also blatantly bewildered as to why Sophia would want to live with Sara after learning she attacked Ethan, insisting that it was "not a good idea" because Sophia has "no idea what kind of person she is." Yet Sophia maintained her bold decision, raising questions as to her real intentions.
Sophia Wants The Township To "Tear Themselves Apart"
To a dying Jim and then a dying priest, the Man in Yellow revealed that what's on the horizon for the Township is his "favorite part" because it's where they all "tear themselves apart." The Man in Yellow hasn't yet indicated exactly how that will happen, but his disguise as Sophia and infiltration into the Township mark a major change in his activities, suggesting that this maneuver will play a role in what comes next.
In the past, the Man in Yellow has been ominous but not remotely subtle in his efforts to sabotage the Township's progress. As early as the season 1 finale, he sent a major storm to destroy their radio tower and crops, and confirmed the intention behind the already clear message with a threatening, undisguised, "Your wife shouldn't have dug that hole, Jim."

While the Man in Yellow seems almost giddy about his prediction of the Township's upcoming tragedy, his radio message also confirmed that, wherever he was, he was already privy to what the townspeople were doing, even inside their homes. This suggests that his entrance into town will serve a purpose beyond simply earning him a front row seat to the community's activities.
All signs point to the Man in Yellow using his disguised entrance as Sophia as a new way to play mind games with the townsfolk. If his goal is for them to not only suffer but to turn on each other, Sophia has a unique opportunity to get in their heads and subtly influence their thoughts about one another. Given that, there are a few reasons that Sara makes sense as Sophia's first target.
Sara Is Already On The Outs With The Rest Of The Township
Kenny's reaction to Sophia's choice confirmed that people have not moved on from Sara's attempt to kill Ethan, something Sara herself is well aware of. If Sophia is looking to play a long game, she may want to start on the fringes of town and slowly work her way in. This is possible since her reaction to the prospect of living in Colony House was, "There are so many people there."
On the other hand, Sophia may look at Sara and see someone the Township is already willing to turn on. If Sophia is looking to start infighting right off the bat, Sara is the easy choice.
However, Sophia was adamant to Kenny that she saw "kindness" in Sara, and that she "doesn't think she's a bad person." Her apparent sincerity seemed more likely to endear Kenny to Sara than the other way around, and this may, in fact, be indicative of an even more sadistic twist in From's future.
If Sophia manages to get the Township to forgive Sara, just to then manipulate her into betraying them once again, the blow to everyone's morale would be much more significant than if Sophia's influence simply confirmed the suspicions they already had. This type of bait and switch would be gutting, but aligned with the types of mind games the Man in Yellow has already played with the townspeople.
It would put everyone on their guard, destroying their capacity for forgiveness and immediately raising the stakes not only for Sara, but for any mistakes or secrets that may come to light across the entire Township.
Sara Is Already Connected To The Town's Evil Forces
Not everyone has had an intimate personal experience with the town's evil forces in the way Sara did with the voices, and Elgin did with the ghostly Kimono Woman. It begs the question of whether certain people are more susceptible to being talked into doing the town's malicious bidding or are inherently connected to the town's negative presence.
While Sara arguably did the right thing in cutting out Elgin's eye so Boyd didn't have to, it indicated that she had already succumbed to a level of darkness that she hoped to save anyone else from reaching. This darkness may be attractive to the town's evil entities, and is perhaps something that drew Sophia to Sara on an almost subconscious level.
Given that the Man in Yellow was revealed to be the voice behind Jim's radio, he was likely behind the voices Sara heard as well. Beyond a general darkness that may appeal to Sophia, she has likely already established a certain connection to Sara that may strengthen Sophia's influence over her.
Still, Sara's conversations and actions with Elgin showed an impressive awareness and growth on her part. Despite everyone else's suspicions, Sara's previous experiences may have actually made her less susceptible to future manipulation, as she's demonstrated a newfound caution towards the town's false promises.
While this may be an added challenge for Sophia to overcome if she hopes to influence the townspeople's thoughts and behavior, it also elevates the potential damage she can inflict if she's successful. If Sophia can, once again, turn the Township against Sara, it would not only put everyone else on their guard but also dismantle Sara's own confidence in reality.
All in all, Sophia has several reasons to feel drawn to Sara, who is a surprisingly perfect candidate to destroy the Township from the inside out. Nonetheless, what exactly Sophia has in mind for her new roommate will only be revealed as From season 4 continues.
