Why Maitreyi Ramakrishnan Says Devi is Dead After Never Have I Ever

Mindy Kaling Talks Saying Goodbye to Never Have I Ever

When Maitreyi Ramakrishnan said goodbye to Devi Vishwakumar, she meant it.

So much so that the Never Have I Ever star decided her character—who navigated the ups and downs of high school following the death of her dad Mohan Vishwakumar (Sendhil Ramamurthy)—had an untimely ending after the fourth and final season.

"I think Devi is dead in a ditch," Maitreyi quipped to E! News in an exclusive interview. "Canonically, I tell people that Devi is dead in a ditch. She has followed in her father's footsteps."

As for why the actress has such a hard stance on Devi's future after the teen began her next chapter at Princeton University?

"I say this to people all the time who are like, 'Season five. Give us season five!'" she explained. "I tell this to people, not because it makes story sense, but I say this in hopes that it'll let people move on."

"Let's grieve our girl and let her go," she continued. "It's OK. She's on her next reincarnation."

Maitreyi has a simple approach to a fifth installment of the Mindy Kaling-created series, should the topic be broached.

"It will be just me in a ditch," she joked. "That's season five, edited by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan. I'll pitch it to Netflix."

The Slanted actress also shared an unfortunate update about Devi's relationship with former rival Ben Gross (Jaren Lewison). As she put it, "Definitely, they've broken up. That was never gonna last. We all know this."

Although Maitreyi was done playing a student at Sherman Oaks, she hasn't said goodbye to high school forever. And fans can look no further than her upcoming film Slanted. After all, the 24-year-old plays Bhindra, the best friend of Chinese American student Joan Huang (Shirley Chen), who undergoes a procedure to become a white girl (Mckenna Grace) in hopes of becoming prom queen.

"At first, I actually was really hesitant about the movie, because I was like, 'Whoa. This is a little controversial. We're taking a big swing,'" Maitreyi admitted. "You're replacing an East Asian girl with a white girl directly. Then we never see her again."

However, her conversation with the film's writer and director Amy Wang, whose own experience as an Asian Australian inspired the project, ultimately convinced her.

"All the movies that I enjoy as an audience member are movies that people would deem controversial and that lends itself to some of the best conversations and filmmaking moments," the Freakier Friday alum reflected. "That excited me, the idea of being controversial in a way that sparks insightful conversation."

After Joan returns from her cosmetic surgery at Ethnos, a mysterious clinic that makes people of color appear white, she goes by Los Angeles-native Jo Hunt. With Jo, complete with blonde hair and blue eyes, now climbing the social ladder, her friendship with Bhindra takes a major hit.

With Slanted joining projects like The Substance and The Beauty in the body horror genre, Maitreyi was grateful to be part of the jarringly gory film.

"It is really cool to be a part of this wave of films coming out right now," she emphasized. "I think it's a fun vehicle to ride when explaining certain stories and narratives. I think all the different genres that we delve into—between body horror, comedy, the satire of it all—make it a nice playing field for us to say something actually quite serious."

While fans wait to see Slanted, premiering in theaters nationwide on March 13, keep reading for more upcoming movies to look out for.
