Warning! This article contains spoilers for Bridgerton season 4, part 2.

While Benedict and Sophie have found their fairy tale happily-ever-after in Bridgerton season 4, gossip and scandal are brewing in Mayfair as a new Lady Whistledown has taken up the quill.

In the final few moments of Bridgerton's emotional rollercoaster of a fourth season, Julie Andrews' familiar voice narrates a new Lady Whistledown column. This moment comes as a "shock" to viewers, the Ton, and even the original Lady Whistledown herself, as Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) retired from her duties earlier in Bridgerton season 4, part 2, with the Queen's (Golda Rosheuvel) reluctant approval.

“While she stands by everything she believes about gossip being information, gossip being power for the voiceless, she realizes that it’s time for her to stop being in that role,” Bridgerton showrunner Jess Brownell said of Penelope's momentous decision. Speaking to Netflix's Tudum, Brownell explained why the series revealed a new Lady Whistledown, and what that might mean for the story in the previously confirmed fifth and sixth seasons:

"Penelope was Julia Quinn’s Whistledown, so we knew we couldn’t really play with that reveal for too long because people could just Google it. But now, we get to play with audience expectations."

Though the show has deliberately made Bridgerton's version of Regency London more inclusive, it has largely followed the narrative and romantic pairings set out in Julia Quinn's original historical romance novels, with each Bridgerton sibling ending up with their pre-determined partners. This Lady Whistledown mystery — Brownell refused to name the new author — represents a major departure from the source material.

It could even drastically change how the show handles Eloise's (Claudia Jessie) and Francesca's (Hannah Dodd) love stories in the upcoming seasons. It's impossible to say what kind of sway this new Whistledown will have over society, after all. However, leaving the audience and the Lords and Ladies of London guessing wasn't the only reason the show introduced a new gossip columnist, according to Brownell.

"Starting with Genevieve (Kathryn Drysdale), the modiste in season 1, to Penelope as Lady Whistledown, and now looking at Sophie (Yerin Ha) as a maid, it’s really key for us to explore the lives of these women who do work, because it’s a time period in which women had so few options and so little agency," Brownell explained.

She continued, "Showing that there were women who didn’t just settle for what was handed to them, but tried their very best to make more of their station, it broadens the female experience in the show." With Sophie as the lead, this season had a distinct Upstairs, Downstairs and Downton Abbey-esque vibe, giving other long-standing female characters of Bridgerton's working class, like Mrs. Wilson (Geraldine Alexander) and Mrs. Varley (Lorraine Ashbourne), a chance to have their voices heard as well.

Bridgerton may, first and foremost, be a romantic drama, but it is also an ensemble show, and everyone's futures are still at stake. Whoever has claimed the Whistledown mantle will have a lot of responsibility — and power — to contend with when the show returns for another social season.

All episodes of Bridgerton season 4 are streaming now, exclusively on Netflix.
