Austin Stowell plays Ryan and is best known for his roles in Dolphin Tale, Bridge of Spies, Catch-22, and The Hating Game.

Nate Lang as Carl Tanner: Carl Tanner is the primary drummer of Fletcher's band when Andrew and Ryan are inducted into the group. As such, Carl is placed into direct competition with Andrew and Ryan, with all three suffering under Fletcher's ruthless mentorship. Nate Lang plays Carl, yet does not have many acting credits; Aside from Whiplash, Lang has appeared in What Maisie Knew, The Fuzz, and Drunk Wedding, and three projects that are unlike Whiplash.
