The world of Dragon Age: The Veilguard is packed with different items you can acquire: valuables to sell for gold and increased faction standing, weapons and armor to upgrade, cosmetics to try on, decorations to customize the Lighthouse, and so much more. While gold is the main currency in Thedas, you'll encounter merchants in the game, like those in the Crossroads, who do not accept gold as payment.
Etheric Remnants are another currency in the game, and you'll need to purchase items from some merchants and fully upgrade your gear with the Caretaker at the Lighthouse. Lucky for Rook and the gang, Etheric Remnants are not too hard to find as long as you know where to look.

How Etheric Remants Work In Dragon Age: The Veilguard
The Go-To Currency Of The Crossroads
Once you have progressed in the game, you'll unlock The Crossroads, a magical dimension where all the magical Elven traveling mirrors, the Eluvians, meet. Many spirits will begin to gather in The Crossroads and set up shops selling rare materials, mementos, appearance items, and valuables for Rook to purchase. However, these spirits will mostly only accept Etheric Remnants as payment, so you'll definitely want to have some on hand.
Periodically, check back in with the spirit merchants in The Crossroads. They will update their wares from time to time, and new shops will open up as you complete the main story quest. They will have many rare materials you'll need to upgrade your gear to the highest levels.
Rook will also need Etheric Remnants when upgrading the party's equipment with the Caretaker at the Lighthouse Workshop. Some (not all) upgrades will require these remnants as a component to complete. Lastly, there are special items you can purchase using Etheric Remnants from Xenon the Antiquarian, the mysterious purveyor of the Black Emporium.
Tips For Finding Etheric Remnants
Go Straight To The Source
Etheric Remnants are produced wherever the Veil, the barrier separating the Fade from the physical world, has been disrupted, broken, or thinned. According to in-game information, remnants can only be gathered from creatures and places connected to the Fade:
- Areas where the Veil has been disrupted or broken.
- Left behind by demons or Fade-touched creatures.
- Gathered in the Crossroads.
As you are exploring the Crossroads and other areas connected to the Fade, keep your eyes open for small green crystals of Etheric Remnants growing out of the ground. You'll also pick up some by defeating demons and other creatures connected to the Fade in combat. If you are out of this important currency, return to the Crossroads, and you'll find more in no time.
