Over the course of a season and a half, Shawn Hatosy's Dr. Jack Abbot has become a standout character on The Pitt, and with the doctor having missed the last two episodes of season 2, we break down when he'll return. Earlier in season 2, Hatosy appeared in episodes 7, 8 and 9 before the character left to get some sleep before his night shift.
Then, after a brief, heavy conversation with Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch (Noah Wyle) in episode 9, Dr. Abbot left to take a nap before his night shift, which is set to begin in the final episodes of The Pitt season 2. But when exactly will Dr. Abbot return on The Pitt?

Following a heart-wrenching cliffhanger in The Pitt season 2, episode 11, next week's episode 12 will encompass the "6:00 P.M." hour, which is the hour directly preceding the end of the day shift and the beginning of the night shift. Although Dr. Robby — as The Pitt's most central character — has been shown arriving for his shift during the hour when it starts (7:00 A.M., the hour both seasons' premieres follow), it's possible Dr. Abbot could arrive early for his shift.
If that's the case, Hatosy may show up in the latter half of The Pitt season 2, episode 12, joining the other reinforcements called in by charge nurse Dana Evans (Katherine LaNasa) to help with the busy Fourth of July.

Trigger Warning: Discussion of suicide and suicidal ideation ahead.
If Dr. Abbot doesn't return in episode 12, then Hatosy's character will return in The Pitt season 2, episode 13, "7:00 P.M." Hatosy confirmed on the TODAY show that Dr. Abbot will be back for the night shift, which starts at 7:00 P.M. in The Pitt. This is determined by characters like Dr. Trinity Santos (Isa Briones) saying during episode 11, "5:00 P.M.," that her shift ends in two hours.
Hatosy told TODAY more about what to expect when Dr. Abbot returns, and is joined by fellow night shift doctors:
For Abbot, he's gonna go away, take a little nap; he'll be back for the night shift. We get to see a little bit more of those characters and what's coming in at night. It's a different sort of experience, the tone shifts a little bit. It's a lot more of Abbot, and everybody else, trying to get through to Robby.
One of the running through lines in The Pitt season 2 is Dr. Robby's deteriorating mental health, with the episodes hinting that he's possibly been contemplating suicide. The most obvious indicator of Dr. Robby's suicidal ideation came in the most recent episode, when Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi) asks the mother of the young heatstroke patient if she's ever thought about hurting herself — all while the camera stays on Dr. Robby, showing his complicated reaction to the question.
In The Pitt season 2, episode 9, it became apparent that Dr. Abbot was worried about Dr. Robby when he told his fellow attending, "You just make sure you come back, and if it gets dark, you call me." Based on Hatosy's comments about the rest of The Pitt season 2, it seems like Dr. Abbot and other characters will make more attempts to break through Dr. Robby's walls as this storyline comes to a head.
As one of Dr. Robby's closest friends, Dr. Abbot is poised to play a pivotal role in the final few episodes of The Pitt season 2, and if Hatosy's character doesn't return next week, he'll surely be back the week after. So, thankfully, Dr. Jack Abbot will be back on The Pitt season 2 soon enough.
