When Hogwarts Will First Appear In HBO's Harry Potter Officially Confirmed

Harry Potter fans won't have to wait long to see Hogwarts in the HBO series.

The eight-episode adaptation of the first Harry Potter book is set to premiere on December 25. Due to the extended format of a television season rather than a feature-length film, there will be more time to explore certain characters and storylines cut from the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone movie, along with adding new elements to the latest take on the fantasy universe. While exciting, this raises questions about when certain iconic moments will occur in season 1.

In an interview with Andre Pilli, Adriano Goldman, director of photography for HBO's Harry Potter series, reveals that episode 1 "only has Hogwarts at the very end." He also confirmed that much of the first episode will be set in the Muggle world, as "we had a recent discussion about this, about how much the first part, especially the first episode, which is before he goes to Hogwarts for the first time, how much that was to be colorful and vibrant, or more sad."

Goldman's comments confirm that fans will see Hogwarts in the first episode of HBO's Harry Potter show, but most of the episode will not be set there. With the majority of the story set at Hogwarts, there was never any expectation of it showing up too late in the series, but the end of episode 1 is still a little sooner than anticipated.

Before the first sighting of Hogwarts in the book and movie, there is the opening scene with Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, and Rubeus Hagrid leaving baby Harry at Privet Drive. There are also the events of Dudley Dursley's birthday, Harry getting his letters to Hogwarts, the Dursleys running from the letters, Hagrid showing up and revealing Harry is a wizard, going to Diagon Alley with Hagrid, going to Platform 9 & 3/4, and the journey on the Hogwarts Express where he meets Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger for the first time.

Even if the first episode is an hour long, this is still a lot to get through before revealing Hogwarts at the very end. By comparison, Harry and his peers see Hogwarts for the first time around the 40-minute mark of the first movie, which is about a fourth of the way through the 152-minute runtime. The HBO series will only be an eighth of the way through season 1 when this happens. It would be strange to rush through the story's early events when the adaptation has been marketed as more faithful and with the benefit of having more time than its predecessors.

One alternative is the first view of Hogwarts not coming from Harry's perspective. The format of the show allows for more perspectives, and Draco Malfoy actor Lox Pratt previously confirmed that "there’s just so much more that you get to see. You get to see all the teachers in their little rooms. You get to see Draco at home." Seeing Hogwarts for the first time through Harry's eyes would be effective note to end the first episode, though, and it may not land in the same way through someone else's perspective.

In addition to Pratt as Draco, HBO's Harry Potter cast features Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, and Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, and Amos Kitson as Dudley.

HBO's Harry Potter premieres on December 25 on HBO and HBO Max.
