During an interview at Motor City Comic Con, Shawn Ashmore teases Wesley's potential direction for The Rookie season 9 and reflects on being Iceman.
In the first four seasons, Wesley was a defense attorney, before becoming an assistant district attorney, unsuccessfully running for DA, before eventually returning to his own law firm in The Rookie season 8. With season 9 set to enter production in July, Ashmore teases about Wesley's future.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Brandon Zachary at Motor City Comic Con, Ashmore revealed that he hadn't seen any scripts yet, but was confident that Wesley's arc would be based on his return to law, and the conflicts this could see him run into with the police, especially his wife, Angela. Despite not having the scripts for The Rookie season 9, he is aware of the direction the writers are looking to take Wesley and might even have been consulted on it.
We don't start shooting season 9 until July, so I haven't seen scripts or anything yet. I can say that I'm very confident that Wesley's story will definitely heavily weigh into working as a defense attorney again. It looks like he might be starting a firm with Del Monte.
Two district attorneys leaving that side of the law could mean they're coming back to more of an adversarial [relationship] with our LAPD officers, which I'm looking forward to. I love the sparring and the chippiness between Angela and Wesley, and we already got a taste of it in the finale with Tim and Wesley, so I think that will be an interesting thing to explore as we move forward through the show.
Season 8 is widely regarded as one of the show's strongest seasons, and being able to follow this up with something satisfactory means making some changes. WithThe Rookie season 9 cast changes already in place, Wesley's career sidestep is also shaking up the story and will bring fresh conflicts to Wesley's interpersonal relationships.
The fact that he will be back defending the criminals arrested by the police (including his wife) will make for some interesting dynamics. The sparring that Ashmore refers to between Angela and Wesley should be back on display and could add an interesting layer to his already tentative relationship with Tim.
Wesley and Del Monte come from very different backgrounds and have different moral and professional styles, which means they complement one another well. There is certainly scope for friction between the two and could lead to a very compelling arc for Wesley in The Rookie season 9.
