While Reacher is a high-octane hit with no signs of slowing down, Timothy Olyphant's 2010s FX series remains the crowning achievement of action-thriller television. Premiering on Prime Video in 2022, Reacher was a success right out of the gate, thanks in large part to Alan Ritchson's butt-kicking, no-nonsense titular antihero. The show instantly took the mantle as Prime Video's ultimate "Dad TV" show after Bosch ended the year before.
There are 30 published novels in Lee Child's Jack Reacher series, with each season of the Prime Video series adapting one of the books, and thus far, the consensus is that Reacher has done a bang-up job. Whereas the Tom Cruise big-screen adaptations never became the cinematic franchise they set out to be, the show continues to deliver the thrills, with limited wait time between seasons — Reacher season 4 is set to premiere on August 12, 2026.
While Ritchson's Jack Reacher may very well continue to entertainingly dispense with bad guys for the next 30 years, it's nigh-impossible that Reacher will reach the heights of Justified. Premiering on FX in 2010, Justified centers on Raylan Givens (Olyphant), a U.S. Marshal in Harlan County, Kentucky, who upholds the law and rights wrongs using his particular brand of frontier-style justice. Justified ran for six successful seasons and spawned a limited sequel series, Justified: City Primeval, in 2023.
Like Reacher, Justified also has revered source material in Elmore Leonard's short stories featuring Givens' character. Both television protagonists are also lone wolves who take the law into their own hands, but while Reacher is still fantastic, Justified reigns supreme when it comes to both shows' similarities and differences.
Reacher Is Great, But It Can't Beat Justified
As enviably cool as Jack Reacher is, he's hardly a complex character. In Reacher's three seasons thus far, the protagonist hasn't changed or deepened in any meaningful way, and that's unlikely to change in season 4. There's nothing necessarily wrong with that, but it limits the reach of the show — no pun intended.
On the other hand, for as skilled and slick as he is, Raylan Givens is a flawed, vulnerable main character, which makes him infinitely more compelling than an overpowered, stoic antihero. With Elmore Leonard's prose to draw from, Givens' dialogue also takes on a poetic yet witty quality that Reacher's deadpan one-liners don't even come close to topping.
Reacher is also a very black-and-white show when it comes to its good guys and bad guys, and the latter, in particular, suffers as a result. They're disposable, forgettable, and often one-dimensional. Justified's best villains, on the other hand, are some of the best antagonists in television history, particularly Walton Goggins' Boyd Crowder, who serves as the dark funhouse mirror version of Raylan Givens. Reacher's storytelling isn't nearly nuanced enough to feature a character like that.

In an inverse of each other, Raylan can't break free of his Kentucky roots despite the fact that Harlan County is turning him into a man he doesn't want to become, while Reacher is the compulsive nomad, always on the move and never stopping to think about what it might mean to create a home for himself. Their lone wolf nature gets them far in their heroic pursuits, but not so much in their emotional development.
Though most of the best neo-Western shows are defined by their sense of place, and Reacher changes locations every season, with its drifter protagonist who embraces old-school frontier justice, Jack Reacher and his story make for a welcome addition to the subgenre — as long as they recognize that nothing can beat Justified.
