WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Ransom Canyon season 2.
All of the characters in Netflix's Western drama series Ransom Canyon connect in various ways, through blood, romance, and everything in between. Ransom Canyon's ensemble cast paired with its multilayered, interweaving story makes it hard sometimes to keep up with every twist and turn, especially when the characters continue to change as the show goes on. With Ransom Canyon being such a small town, which is loosely inspired by the real town of the same name outside Lubbock, Texas, just about everyone is in everybody else's business, and word travels fast regardless of what's happening or who it's happening to.
While Staten and Quinn, played by Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly, are technically the series leads in Ransom Canyon, just about every character gets a fair share of screen time and is directly involved in one or more of the various storylines. From various "will they, won't they" relationship dynamics, college athletics dreams, land disputes, rodeo competitions, and even a murder mystery, Ransom Canyon has a lot to offer and is being compared to Yellowstone. The show's second season upped the stakes for most of its characters, and left things on an interesting cliffhanger ahead of a possible season 3.
Staten Kirkland Is A Widower Whose Son Randall Died In A Car Crash
Staten Kirkland is the main character in Ransom Canyon who has a strong yet troublesome reputation around town. He's been given a lot of passes since his wife died of an illness three years before the series takes place and his son, Randall, died in a tragic car crash. At least Staten is a wealthy ranch owner whose Kirkland name carries a lot of respect in the town. That is, when he's not striking up bar fights or drinking past his limit.
Staten is the brother-in-law of Davis Collins, who only appears in Ransom Canyon season 1. After his sister died, Davis tried to look after Randall in his own way but often crossed the line with Staten, such as when he gave him the sports car for his birthday, which he would ultimately die in. Staten is also Reid's uncle, which makes his hookup with Davis's ex-wife, Paula Jo, kind of strange. Although he gives Lucas a job as a ranch hand, he's not related to him. Staten's father, Samuel, is a senator from Texas.
Quinn O'Grady Is Staten’s “Girl Who Got Away” & His Late Wife’s Best Friend
Apart from being a main love interest in Ransom Canyon, Quinn is a dance hall owner and a concert pianist. She returns to Ransom Canyon after a stint in New York and during Ransom Canyon season 2, Quinn struggles with the tug of a potential new relationship with a New York musician. Quinn is Staten's "girl who got away" and was his wife's best friend before her death. Quinn Nick's aunt. Nick's mom is Angie, Quinn's sister, who's featured more heavily during Ransom Canyon season 2. Their mother is also featured in the most recent season, played by Patricia Clarkson.
Ellie Catawnee Is Like A Daughter To Cap Fuller & Is Yancy Grey’s Love Interest
Ellie Catawnee connects a lot of dots in the Ransom Canyon universe. First of all, she looks up to Cap Fuller as a father figure and works with Quinn at the dance hall as a bartender. She becomes Yancy's love interest but is revealed to have had a romantic history with Kai, the deputy sheriff who works with Dan Brigman. Once she finds out that Yancy meant to manipulate Cal, she tries driving him out of town, only to end up accepting his marriage proposal. Finally, she meets Yancy's wife, Sidney, in the final moments of Ransom Canyon season 1.
As Ransom Canyon season 2 gets underway, it's revealed that Ellie is pregnant, and though she and Yancy are attempting to keep their relationship under wraps so that his estranged wife will leave them alone, they're not doing a great job of it. As Ellie's pregnancy advances, it becomes more difficult for her to deal with Sidney, who tries consistently to push Yancy into working cons with her. Ellie's pregnancy ends abruptly and though she and the baby are safe, she's openly fearful of what darkness Yancy could bring into their daughter's future.
At the end of Ransom Canyon season 2, Ellie breaks things off with Yancy, using Kai as a shield and complicating the dynamics of her pseudo family even more.
Davis Collins Is The Brother Of Staten’s Ex-Wife, Reid’s Father & Randall’s Uncle
Davis is Staten's brother-in-law, Reid's father, Paula Jo's ex-husband, and had a relationship with Quinn during the show's first season. Staten says Davis is a wannabe rancher and works in the interest of Austin Water & Power, trying to get Staten to sell his land to fill his wife Paula Jo's pockets, who's on their board. Davis also wants to acquire Cap Fuller's ranch, which is why he helps Yancy Grey get out of prison and sets up a con. After struggling throughout Ransom Canyon season 1, Davis left to be with Paula Jo ahead of the second season.
Yancy Grey Is Secretly The Grandson Of Cap Fuller
Yancy Grey is the biggest enigma of Ransom Canyon, particularly because he's also the biggest liar. He turns out to be the biological grandson of Cap Fuller, who lives alone on his ranch in Ransom Canyon and visits his wife at a nearby nursing home. Yancy's identity is ultimately exposed to Cap by Davis. Yancy is a drifter and newcomer to Ransom who was plotting to trick Cap into selling his land. Instead, he inherits it after Cap's death and was planning to live with Ellie there until his wife, of all people, shows up at the last minute.
Yancy was in prison for an unknown crime. Kai tried to look into his past, but his file was surprisingly sealed. Yancy wanted revenge against Cap because he turned his mother away after his father, Lincoln, Cap's son, died. Staten convinces Yancy that he's a Fuller at heart, which is why Yancy doesn't sell Cap's land to Davis for $22 million. Ransom Canyon season 2 expands Yancy's story as he navigates his relationship with Ellie, who's shockingly pregnant with his baby, and his estranged wife, who's trying to run a con through Yancy in exchange for a much-needed divorce.
Lauren Brigman Is The Sheriff’s Daughter & Both Reid & Lucas’s Love Interest
Lauren Brigman is an ambitious high school cheerleader. Formerly Reid Collins's girlfriend, she ultimately chose Lucas Russell as her boyfriend. She is the daughter of Sheriff Dan Brigman who, in an unthinkable turn of events, has to arrest his wife, Lauren's mother, Margaret, for her involvement in the death of Staten's son, Randall. Lauren and Kit, Lucas's brother, form an understanding after he helped her with her injuries endured during the tornado. Lauren knew her mom, Margaret, was a problematic and neglectful drunk, but she had no idea it could be that bad.
Throughout Ransom Canyon season 2, Lauren struggles with what's next for her as she moves through grief, and while Lucas is there to support her, her connection with Kit becomes more of a lifeline. As the season continues, Lauren and Kit grow close while her relationship with Lucas is strained, especially when he begins to resent trying to help her move through her pain. Kit and Lauren share a kiss that Lucas catches them in, and while he's hurt, his own infidelity pushes Lauren further toward his brother.
Kit Russell Is Lucas’s Older Brother & Legal Guardian Who Had An Affair With Margaret
Kit Russell is Lucas's older brother and legal guardian until he signs emancipation papers in the Ransom Canyon season 1 finale. Kit had an affair with Margaret Brigman and was there on the night that Randall died. Kit hid the truth that Margaret was behind the wheel of the pickup truck that night because he loved her. Kit is also involved in some shady business to make ends meet. Lucas has several college offers and has a clear path to get out of Ransom Canyon, but chooses to stay. Lucas and Reid are friends but also rivals, fighting over Lauren.
During Ransom Canyon season 2, as Lucas struggles to figure out how he can connect with Lauren, Kit finds his way closer to his brother's girlfriend. As the season continued, Kit and Lauren grew closer, while Lucas descended into a darker world, partying with his friends instead of spending time with his girlfriend. On the night that Kit and Lauren kissed, Lucas cheated on Lauren, which led to him pushing Lauren to go after Kit when he tries to leave town for good. Ransom Canyon will see the brothers facing a complicated future.
