A teaser for Fumito Ueda’s next game premiered at The Game Awards 2024 Thursday.
Okay, now that we’re all done levitating and emitting pure light like Beast at the end of Beauty and the Beast, let’s talk about what we just witnessed.
The two-minute video depicts a small human climbing the anatomy of a giant robot as a voice counts down to some sort of apocalyptic, ground-zero-creating disaster. After watching an impending wave of debris, the pilot climbs into the mech’s head, which then detaches and floats away from the body. We’re given one last look at the abandoned mechanical skeleton before its engulfed by the mysterious catastrophe. Credits indicate the game’s working title is Project: Robot, with Ueda as creative director.
Ueda is the visionary game developer behind games like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and most recently The Last Guardian. He and his team at GenDesign are developing Project: Robot with the publishers at Epic Games for the Epic Games Store as well as PlayStation and (for the first time in Ueda’s career) Xbox consoles. That said, the announcement doesn’t specify which PlayStation or Xbox, so we may be in for a long wait.
