He alleged that David's iconic Mohican haircut was inspired by his own look.

The professional footballer turned heads when he opted for the bold and daring look in 2001 and revealed the style to the world during The World Cup.

While people may think he was the ultimate trendsetter at the time, the singer has proven he is not.

Speaking to hosts Gordon Smart and Martin Compston on the Restless Natives podcast about his latest album L.A. Times he revealed he was the man behind the infamous hairdo.

He said: 'I asked the guy who's always cut my hair, Pete, down here at cuts and he is responsible for the fin, he was responsible for the sort of, blondie one.'

Gordon said: 'The mohawk?'

Fran added: 'The mohawk one that Beckham took and ran off with. Do you know how that happened?'

Gordon said: 'No.'

Fran: 'I met Beckham when I had that and he had the big stookie on his leg. Him and Posh Spice were coming out of Toys R Us, and I met him in the car park.'

Fran revealed: 'Swear to god. They came out of that Toys R Us like they’d won the jackpot in Crackerjack. Honest to god. I’ve never seen so many toys in my life and I had just had that cut and he’s like "Hello, mate!".

'I’ve never met him before and I’m like "Oh my god, how’s your foot?" And you know, we chatted for a minute. Two weeks later, he had the cut and that was before the World Cup. Yet he then went off and this haircut became - Everyone had it.'

Gordon said: 'What an amazing claim to fame. Fran Healy was responsible for a Beckham haircut.'
