Those who tuned in at the start know that Final Space is one of the best post-modern sci-fi romps of its era. Unfortunately, it was better than we deserved, as the historical record would eventually prove. Despite the show's incredible quality, Olan Rogers' epic space saga was unceremoniously canceled after three seasons, just as the story was reaching its final climax. It's time to unpack one of television's worst tragedies in recent memory, Final Space.

'Final Space' Delivered an Epic Space Odyssey

At the outset, Final Space appears to be a goofy sci-fi comedy, but as the story unfolds, it reveals itself to be an ambitious, bold, and epic space opera. The story follows Gary Goodspeed (Rogers), a ne'er-do-well space ranger who is about to complete a multi-year sentence aboard a prison ship. He soon encounters and befriends a cute and gentle alien he names Mooncake (also Rogers). Mooncake is also a planet-destroying weapon, built for combat. The chance meeting sets Gary on an epic adventure across space and time, unlocking the secrets of a deadly dimension called "Final Space."

'Final Space' Is Being Wrongly Erased, Thanks to Warner-Discovery Merger

The Warner-Discovery merger is effectively removing most shreds of this series. But should it actually be erased?

Over the course of three seasons, Rogers crafts an incredible space odyssey, filled with charming, lovable characters and an enthralling, escalating storyline. The comedy of Final Space acts more like the icing on the cake, or the chocolate sauce on a sundae. Through the show's ongoing storyline, Final Space proves to be an emotional, heartbreaking journey for Gary and his allies as they seek to save the universe and each other. Think Rick and Morty, but with less nihilism. The main characters, like Gary, are flawed, but they genuinely strive to do the right thing and possess more aspirational goals. In its third season, Rogers' storyline approached a major turning point. Gary and his team were able to save Quinn (Tika Sumpter) and escape Final Space, but they released the malevolent eldritch abomination, Invictus (Vanessa Marshall), in the process, ending the show on a brutal cliffhanger. Unfortunately, despite the show's incredible storytelling and quality, that was not enough for parent company WarnerMedia.

'Final Space' Became the Victim of Corporate Shenanigans

Sadly, the timing of Final Space Season 3 could not have been worse. The third season wrapped up in July 2021, not long after Discovery, Inc. announced plans to acquire WarnerMedia as part of a major corporate merger, giving way to Warner Bros. Discovery. In September 2021, Rogers confirmed the show’s cancellation, but that was only the tip of the iceberg. It wasn't enough for WarnerMedia to make Final Space a sacrificial lamb to the incoming corporate merger.

Discovery inherited a great deal of debt as a result of the corporate merger with WarnerMedia into Warner Bros. Discovery, so WBD began pulling multiple beloved or high-quality shows from its various networks and platforms, turning them into tax write-offs. Remember what happened with Batgirl, or Coyote vs. Acme, before Ketchup Entertainment rescued it? Other victims of WBD's write-off strategy included the amazing Infinity Train, Summer Camp Island, OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes, and, unfortunately, Final Space, with Olan Rogers confirming in October 2022 that the series became another WBD tax write-off. Due to WBD's corporate shenanigans, there is now no legal way to stream or view Final Space online, showcasing the perils of streaming content and the discontinuation of physical media.

The Legacy of 'Final Space' Is Uncertain but Still Exists

Despite its treatment, with WBD essentially erasing the wonderful animated series from existence, Rogers did manage to receive permission to continue his storyline in graphic novel form. The graphic novel ending, Final Space: The Final Chapter, is due to arrive later this year, with preorders now available. At the very least, it serves as a small consolation for fans who invested and fell in love with Rogers' incredible storyline. However, it's still maddeningly frustrating that Rogers was forced to self-finance his own graphic novel project, despite creating an amazing series that wasn't allowed to reach its natural conclusion.

Final Space provided a fun, exciting, and memorable sci-fi odyssey filled with tremendous characters. The show also featured a prestigious, award-winning all-star voice cast, boasting Steven Yeun, David Tennant, Ron Perlman, Claudia Black, and Conan O'Brien! The treatment of Final Space before and after it got axed remains one of the greatest injustices of television history. It's utterly tragic that the show isn't even available to revisit for a weekend binge. However, the sci-fi saga's legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of fans.
