VisionQuest is a phenomenal contribution to the wider MCU, delivering a series that not only smashes superhero fatigue but also transcends the genre.

Ben is a Senior Writer on the New TV team at Screen Rant. He graduated from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class B.A. Degree in English Literature and History.

Born and raised in Ireland, Ben has always had a love for storytelling in all forms of media and operates multiple projects under the name Benjamin Blogs. Ben is a comic book writer and podcast host, in addition to his work as an entertainment journalist. He has worked as both a writer and editor for Screen Rant, Collider, and other media outlets across various departments, including features, news, reviews, and interviews.

VisionQuest manages to take the building blocks of a sprawling, decades-old franchise and create something that feels entirely fresh and electric from start to finish. Sure, the MCU has had time to build an established fanbase, but as the Multiverse Saga has proven, the goodwill of longstanding fans has begun to fizzle out; VisionQuest might just be the antidote for those suffering from superhero fatigue.

As a series, VisionQuest slots perfectly into the Scarlet Witch trilogy, wrapping up a story that largely begins in WandaVision. However, with the inclusion of several figures that defined earlier moments in the MCU, this series goes so much deeper. At the heart of the story is The Vision, on a journey to make sense of his own reality and reunite with his son, which quickly evolves and expands in a number of different directions.

And yet, despite ambitiously filling out the eight-episode runtime with numerous mysteries, big reveals, and character arcs, this series feels incredibly tight and effective in its storytelling. Not a moment is wasted, and every episode builds anticipation for what comes next. Unexpectedly, this might just be the best MCU TV show ever made.

One detail that needs to be addressed when reviewing any project that stems from a wider universe of stories is the fact that often these narratives have a symbiotic relationship. One feeds into the other, and often, there is a level of reliance, which translates to the audience needing to have a wider knowledge to enjoy the latest project to the fullest extent.

I won't lie and say that this show is going to have newcomers jumping for joy with the reveals, but that said, I do think the series works without an encyclopedic MCU knowledge. However, the more invested you are in the franchise, the more this series delivers with a wide range of small but satisfying details, and a carefully curated selection of deeply impactful reveals.

Not a moment is wasted, and every episode builds anticipation for what comes next.

However, VisionQuest also slots into the Scarlet Witch trilogy with ease as a sort of third season following on from the events of the limited series WandaVision, and the limited series Agatha All Along. The story is largely concerned with seeing where Vision stands after the explosive events at the end of WandaVision, and it dives deeper into the overarching theme of family, with Tommy Maximoff's return and the interplay of a familial kinship between James Spader's Ultron and Paul Bettany's Vision.

As such, the dominant theme in this series about synthetic robots, artificial intelligence, and delving through the depths of a digital mind is family. And as much as that theme may feel contradictory to the content, the series brilliantly navigates a challenging analysis of what family means, while juggling incredible visuals and a fantasy world.

Terry Matalas Delivers 4D Chess With VisionQuest

The way that VisionQuest manages to do so much in what is truly not a great deal of time is absolutely stunning. And this is evidently in large part down to the series creator, Terry Matalas, who brings the wealth of his incredible experience to this role for what stands out as his best piece of work to date.

Matalas juggles layers in the story in a way that feels more satisfying and concrete than the occasionally baffling Inception from Christopher Nolan, as the story moves between the overworld, where reality is occurring, the digital world, where devices and intelligences can connect and community, to the inner minds of sentient computers like Vision, and then sprinkles in a healthy dose of flashbacks for context and to further build out the story.

In the wrong hands, this could easily lead to disaster, but Matalas creates something that is greater than the sum of its parts, and continually manages to build beautiful, emotional, and deeply moving character arcs for numerous figures in the narrative, along with incredible twists that land with profound precision, and the story never feels out of control.

In addition, every character has a distinct and unique voice, personality, and style that just makes this series a joy to watch, and adds so much vibrancy to a character who literally had all of the color drained out of him in his last MCU appearance. Matalas has an incredible ability to tap into the heart of the MCU, extract numerous powerful pieces of dialogue, and build them up even further in a way that feels like it was written into the fabric of the MCU from the beginning.

VisionQuest Is An Outstanding Superhero Sci-Fi Story

Of course, VisionQuest is also a superhero series, set inside the most ambitious superhero franchise ever to appear on-screen. But, the way this story is designed and delivered makes it impossible to neatly declare it as a singular genre. Instead, VisionQuest transcends to incorporate the superhero story with sci-fi, drama, comedy, and even a dash of sitcom at times.

So much of the story is set inside the mind of a machine, which is inhabited by several other machines. With that, the narrative could have felt dry and humorless, or struggled to create emotions that the audience could resonate with, but in both of these regards, VisionQuest excels in a way that few other sci-fi stories or superhero stories ever manage.

The biggest grievance that I have now is anxiously awaiting to see what is next for these characters...

There is wit, there are high stakes, there is mystery, there is betrayal, there's love, there's family, and there is so much more that makes this series a genuine joy to experience, and one of the most impactful stories of the wider MCU. With incredible performances from everyone in the cast, particularly Bettany and Spader, who frequently push each other to excel thanks to their natural chemistry, this is an incredible series unlike anything else.

The biggest grievance that I have now is anxiously awaiting to see what is next for these characters, and where in the MCU they could show up. Such is the way of shows that exist in a larger franchise, but with VisionQuest in particular, I think there is a spark of creativity that takes this series far beyond what most other MCU projects have managed to achieve. With that in mind, please bring Terry Matalas back to helm more MCU stories.

The first 2 episodes of VisionQuest will be available to stream on Disney+ from October 14, 2026, with one new episode releasing each week thereafter.
