United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson Fatally Shot in Apparent Targeted New York City Attack
UPDATE: Authorities have arrested Luigi Mangione on firearm charges in Altoona, Pennsylvania, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced at a news conference Dec. 9. The 26-year-old, who has not been charged in connection with Brian Thompson's killing, has been named as a strong person of interest during the NYPD press conference. Tisch noted that Mangione was found in possession of a ghost gun and suppressor that was "consistent with the weapon used in the murder."
Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenney said that a handwritten three-page document, which is in the possession of the Altoona Police Department, was recovered and "speaks to both" Mangione's "motivation and mindset."
However, Kenney noted that "just from briefly speaking" with the investigators, "It does seem that he has some ill will toward corporate America."

New details may lead to more answers in the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
After the health insurance executive was fatally shot outside of a New York City hotel Dec. 4, authorities are questioning a Pennsylvania man in connection to the killing, NBC News reported.
Although it is too soon to know if the man is connected to Thompson's killing, multiple officials told the outlet that this could be a break in the case. According to two senior officials, authorities arrived at a McDonald's 280 miles from the shooting after a customer thought the man looked suspicious. Senior law enforcement officials told NBC News that the man was taken to the police station for questioning after noticing a fake ID, where they discovered that he had a similar gun to the one used in Thompson's killing and a silencer.
The latest update comes after a backpack was found Dec. 6 in Central Park that law enforcement believes could belong to the suspect, officials told NBC News. The bag, which contained Monopoly money and a jacket, was sent to a lab to see if it was indeed linked to the shooter, per the outlet.
On the same day, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenney told CNN that investigators believe the gunman left New York City as they have footage of him taking a taxi to the Port Authority Bus Terminal. "We don't have any video of him exiting," he explained, "so we believe he may have gotten on a bus."

Although the motive of the shooting is still unclear, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the incident as a "premeditated, preplanned targeted attack" during a Dec. 4 news conference.
"It appears a suspect was lying in wait for several minutes," she explained. "As the victim was walking to the conference hotel, the suspect approached behind and fired several rounds, striking the victim at least once in the back and at least once in the right calf. Many people passed the suspect, but he appeared to wait for his intended target."
Investigators also recovered three discharged gun shell casings from the scene, which a senior New York City law enforcement official told NBC News had the words "deny," "defend" and "depose" etched on them.
And Thompson’s wife, Paulette Thompson, told the outlet that prior to his death, he had been receiving threats.
“Yes, there had been some,” she explained. “I don’t know, a lack of coverage? I don’t know details. I just know that he said there were some people that had been threatening him.”
