United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson Fatally Shot in Apparent Targeted New York City Attack
The case of who killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has yet to be solved.
The executive was fatally shot in New York on Dec. 4, 2024, with New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch noting the incident appears to have been a "brazen targeted attack" and not a random act of violence.
As NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny revealed in a Dec. 4 media briefing, Thompson was seen walking alone towards the New York Hilton Midtown at 6:44 a.m. presumably for a UnitedHealth Group investors conference at 8 a.m. that day.
The shooter—who had headed to the outside of the Hilton about five minutes before Thompson’s arrival and had watched other people walk by, per investigators—then fired at the 50-year-old CEO.
"As the victim was walking to the conference hotel, the suspect approached from behind and fired several rounds, striking the victim at least once in the back and at least once in the right calf," Tisch stated. "Many people passed the suspect, but he appeared to wait for his intended target."
Kenny said the NYPD’s Midtown North Precinct responded to a call about the shooting at 6:46 a.m. and two minutes later arrived at the scene, where they found Thompson with gunshot wounds. The shooter had already fled. According to Kenny, emergency medical services transported Thompson to nearby Mount Sinai West, where he was pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m.
The gunman has yet to be named or arrested—though the NYPD has released pictures of a person of interest—and the investigation remains ongoing as officials search for answers.
"The motive for this murder currently is unknown," Kenny added, "but based on the evidence we have so far it does appear the victim was specifically targeted. But at this point, we do not know why."

Thompson’s wife Paulette has spoken about the threats her late husband had received in the past.
"Yes, there had been some threats," she told NBC News Dec. 5. "Basically, I don’t know, a lack of coverage? I don’t know details. I just know that he said there were some people that had been threatening him."
As investigators continue to look for the gunman, UnitedHealthcare has expressed how "our hearts are broken" over Thompson’s death and his family has shared their grief.
“We are shattered to hear about the senseless killing of our beloved Brian,” a family statement obtained by NBC affiliate KARE on Dec. 5 read. “Brian was an incredibly loving, generous, talented man who truly lived life to the fullest and touched so many lives. Most importantly, Brian was an incredibly loving father to our two sons and will be greatly missed. We appreciate your condolences and request complete privacy as our family moves through this difficult time.”
