Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is getting an animated series to chronicle his earliest adventures, but Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will also get a prequel comic series from Marvel Comics. With the first issue releasing in December, the prequel series is set to run for five issues in time for the release of the animated series on Disney+.

In the preview released to AIPT, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1 opens with the wall-crawler in what appears to be his very first super-villain brawl. Check out the preview below:

While it’s hard to tell from the art released thus far, the villain seen in the preview appears to be Hammerhead, the mobster with the steel-plated, indestructible skull. As one of Spider-Man's classic villains, Hammerhead would be a good choice for the first super-villain to fight against this version of the wallcrawler.

While Tom Holland’s Spider-Man got his own trilogy of films with several appearances in the MCU, his full origin story has never officially been told. The animated series will show off an alternate version of his origins where Norman Osborn is Peter Parker’s mentor instead of Tony Stark. The comic book series promises to build out the world of the show even more, introducing Peter’s supporting cast and promising the debut of some classic Spider-Man villains along the way. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1 will be a must-read series for fans excited about the upcoming Disney+ series.

Writer Christos Gage talks about his approach to the new series, teasing at least one major hero who will be appearing throughout the course of the series:

I’ve had the privilege of writing a lot of Spider-Man’s adventures, both in comics and in the Insomniac video games, but one thing I’ve never gotten the chance to do is recount his earliest exploits. And the exciting part about this book is it’s a brand new take on those formative times. While this is definitely Peter Parker, the Spidey we know and love, he’s got a new cast of supporting characters – including Nico Minoru, who you may know from Runaways – and some surprising twists!

The reveal that Nico Minoru will be appearing is incredibly exciting, and will leave fans speculating as to what heroes will show up throughout the five-issue series.

Whether or not his first villain is revealed to be Hammerhead, fans definitely won’t want to miss Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1 when it debuts next month. Featuring covers by Leonardo Romero, Natacha Bustos, and In-Hyuk Lee, the new series certainly won’t be hurting for great artwork. A special Animation Variant Cover rounds out the variants available for this debut issue, giving collectors plenty of options to hunt down for their collections. The comic book prequel to Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man should provide an alternate look at how Tom Holland’s Spider-Man came to be.
