Titanic Trending On Disney+ Is A Reminder Of One Shocking Fact About $2 Billion Movies

3 hours ago 4

Titanic is currently trending on Disney+, and it highlights a surprising fact about the streaming service's impressive catalog when it comes to $2 billion box office movies. Technically, Titanic was added to Disney+ as part of Hulu's February 2025 releases, but seeing as the content is merged into one expansive streaming library, the 1997 movie is now available to all Disney+ subscribers. Since it's distributed by Paramount, at least in the US and Canada, it also means that the movie is streaming on Paramount+. However, Disney+ now has something to brag about with Titanic's arrival.

Not only is James Cameron's Titanic true story-inspired movie celebrated for its various award achievements, including 11 Academy Award wins, but the movie is also culturally noteworthy for its multitude of box office records. For one, the movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet was the first film in history to hit $1 billion at the worldwide box office, and it did so within three months of its initial release. 14 years after hitting that milestone, Titanic crossed over the $2 billion mark at the box office, becoming the second movie to ever do so. The first was, of course, a Disney movie.

All 6 Movies That Made Over $2 Billion At The Box Office Are Streaming On Disney+

5 Of The Movies Are From Walt Disney Studios

To date, only six movies have garnered over $2 billion at the box office when looking at worldwide numbers. Interestingly, the six $2 billion box office movies in history are now all streaming on Disney+. Titanic certainly doesn't instantly scream "Disney" in the traditional sense, but the same can be said for some of the other movies on the list.

Granted, Disney's acquisition of studios like 20th Century Fox, Lucasfilm, and Marvel Studios have certainly changed things over the years. The acquisition of 20th Century Fox notably led to Disney gaining ownership of the Avatar franchise. With that said, here's a look at the six $2 billion movies now available on Disney+:

It's important to note that the above list does not include any data that was adjusted for inflation, though the "all-time" aspect includes the movies' re-releases. Aside from being able to now claim Titanic as part of the fun streaming fact, Disney could go bigger with bragging rights, considering 10 of the 15 highest-grossing movies in history were made under the Disney umbrella. Add in Titanic's newest streaming home and Disney+ is only missing Jurassic World (#9), Furious 7 (#12), Top Gun: Maverick (#13), and Barbie (#15) from its catalog regarding the "Top Lifetime Grosses" list in movie history (via Box Office Mojo).

James Cameron Directed Half Of The Movies That Made Over $2 Billion

Avatar 2 Might Not Be James Cameron's Last Movie To Hit The Big Box Office Milestone For Disney

If the fact that Disney+ holds all six movies that have made over $2 billion isn't interesting enough, there's also the fact that James Cameron directed half of the biggest movies at the box office. 2009's Avatar still holds the top spot as the highest-grossing movie in history, with Cameron's sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water currently holding the #3 spot. Just behind the Avatar sequel is Titanic, another movie from the brilliant mind of James Cameron during his illustrious career. The current standings now highlight Cameron as the writer and director for three of the four biggest movies at the box office.

James Cameron is one of the most bankable directors in Hollywood, but not every movie from the internationally acclaimed director was so successful.

There's no doubt that James Cameron is one of the most successful filmmakers on the planet, alive or otherwise. With several upcoming Avatar movies in development, including 2025's Avatar: Fire and Ash, it's very possible for Cameron to eventually find more of his titles on the highest-grossing box office list. It's unclear if and when the original Avatar will be bumped from first place, or where Titanic will be among the list as the years go by, but the filmmaker has a few more chances to break the $2 billion mark again before his career comes to an end. With Disney's connection to Cameron, there's already a great chance that Disney+'s $2 billion movie list will keep growing.
