Destiny 2 has kicked off its final episode with a bang by killing off one of the franchise's longest-running and beloved characters. Destiny 2 has seen a roller coaster of 2024, leading off the Summer with the well-reviewed The Final Shape DLC, widely regarded as the best expansion in the franchise. This was followed by two episodes meant to wrap up the stories that have loose ends, but have largely failed and led to the lowest player count in the history of the game.
The third and final episode, Heresy, looks to change the narrative of this model. Even before the exciting first mission, this was arguably the episode most players had circled. This episode sees the return of the beloved Dreadnought location and seemingly Destiny's first big bad, Oryx. The Hive has always been the most compelling of the enemy factions, so seeing how they are handling a Witness-free galaxy is intriguing to many.
Destiny 2 Has "Killed" Eris Morn
An Emotional Loss
The shocking moment of Hersey's launch day was that Eris Morn was "killed" by an unknown member of the Dread. This has come much to the surprise of many players and the game's characters, especially thanks to the remarkable work from the voice actors of The Drifter reacting to it and Eris Morn saying her goodbyes. Her death has now sparked the main conflict of the season, a full-on assault on the Dreadnaught to figure out what is going on.

The trick about this situation is after the mission, players are shown a cutscene of Eris Morn waking up in another location and laughing. This could be for two reasons. One is that last year she technically became a Hive God, so while she can be killed in the real world, she will persist in some way in her Throne World, if able to achieve one. The other option is that she finally received the death she felt she deserved, finally being at rest since the years she escaped Crota's pit.
Why Destiny 2's Episodes Have Been Failing
Barely Passing Content
Though Destiny 2's story has remained solid, the episodes have been lackluster. This has been because of a combination of things, but mainly a lack of appealing content. The previous two episodes had poor multiplayer content that did not encourage player participation, a problem mixed with lackluster rewards and a continued disregard of Destiny 2's ritual content.

The new exotic mission "Kell's Fall" in Destiny 2 holds a brand-new organ puzzle perfectly fitting with the vampiric theme of the season.
The other aspect that has been hurting Destiny is decision-making. Crafting would be the most obvious argument here, as what was once a large boon for casual players has become a heated topic. At first, outcry began about the loot chase feeling lacking given almost everything that could be crafted. This led Bungie to make fewer weapons craftable, and paired with a focus system in Tonics that did not work consistently, the problem ultimately swung in the opposite direction.
Where Heresy Is Leading Destiny 2
Adventure Beyond Our Galaxy
As established by Destiny 2's newest roadmap, the franchise is making changes to the content plans. Every year there will now be two major expansions that will be roughly the size of Rise of Iron, which is one of Destiny's best DLCs. Each expansion will come with two free mini-updates on the scale of what was received during The Final Shape's delay.
Bungie does its best when its back is to the wall.
The new expansion also suggests that humanity will finally attempt to leave our solar system. This leads to Heresy, as the Dreadnaught, with all the Pyramid ships gone, is the only known ship still around that can handle those voyages. Thus, while dealing with the new Dread and Hive threats, the Vanguard will likely end up as the new management of the Dreadnaught. How this exactly happens will have to wait until more of the story is revealed in the coming weeks and acts.
This is exactly the boost that Destiny 2 needed in its most dire times. With clamors of a sequel being needed and Bungie putting more focus on Marathon, things were looking bleak for Destiny. However, it has become a common trend that Bungie does its best when its back is to the wall, and there is no better case of that than this. Thus, Destiny 2 killing off this fan-favorite character and building the entire Heresy episode is leading this beloved franchise to its future.
