Timothy Olyphant’s Western-style lawman character was last seen getting treatment from The Modifier for the wounds he suffered during his showdown with bounty hunter Cad Bane, setting up a possible Cobb Vanth return as a cyborg a la BOBF’s cybernetically-enhanced Mods gang. But asking Vanth actor Olyphant to fill in the blanks on his franchise future is an exercise in futility, the star remaining as tight-lipped on the subject as one of his Stoic on-screen characters.
"I'm sworn to secrecy,” Olyphant said when asked recently whether he has filmed anything for any upcoming Star Wars project (via Today). He does admit that he keeps in touch with producers, however, saying, “Every six months I text those people and I say, 'Me and my character, both not dead.' I'm always letting them know, so we'll see."
The Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett star’s new non-update reiterates what he said to ScreenRant in a 2025 SDCC appearance. “I appreciate that question. I'm not allowed to talk about that,” he said in response to a query about when Cobb Vanth might return.
There had been speculation about a possible Olyphant appearance as a cyborg Vanth in this summer’s Mandalorian and Grogu movie, but the character did not show up as hoped. A quick scan of future Star Wars TV projects reveals the animated Ninth Jedi, the live-action Ahsoka season 2, and the animated Maul – Shadow Lord season 2, none of which seem good candidates for a Vanth pop-in. The Star Wars movie slate, including 2027’s Starfighter along with several projects in the limbo category, is similarly free of stories that stand out as natural points for a Vanth re-introduction.
The Mandalorian and Grogu 2 might have offered a good opportunity to bring Olyphant’s Vanth back into the fold, but such a sequel seems unlikely to happen after the first film made just $345 million (and still counting) worldwide on a budget of $165 million. Mandalorian season 4 would also have been a natural place to continue Vanth’s story post-cybernetic-make-over but Jon Favreau has made comments suggesting the season will never happen, though it’s now fair to wonder whether Disney, having steered Mando onto a theatrical course, will reappraise the situation given Mandalorian and Grogu’s terrible box office performance.
Not that Olyphant really needs Star Wars. The always-busy Cobb Vanth actor can currently be seen as Anya Taylor-Joy’s imprisoned father in Apple TV’s Lucky, and is set to return as the android Kirsh in Alien: Earth season 2. He also makes an appearance in Netflix’s The Adventures of Cliff Booth as his Once Upon a Time in Hollywood character James Stacy.
