More than 25 years later, Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow is still widely regarded as one of the strongest adaptations of the Headless Horseman legend and remains one of the most visually iconic films of Burton’s career. Now, this gothic horror classic has officially returned with a brand-new dark fantasy sequel series, and fans are already loving it.

Fans can now return to the world of Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow in IDW Publishing’s new prequel series, Sleepy Hollow: The Witches of the Western Wood. This five-part limited comic book series explores the origin story of Mary Van Tassel, the primary antagonist of the 1999 film Sleepy Hollow.

As the official synopsis for the series teases, The Witches of the Western Wood goes back to a time before Mary Van Tassel terrorized Sleepy Hollow with the Headless Horseman, when she was still known as Sarah Archer, “a young girl trying to survive her witch of a mother.” Hence, this series is a must-read for fans of Sleepy Hollow looking to see the film’s iconic villain further fleshed out, as well as for those who simply enjoy a witchy dark fantasy story.

Sleepy Hollow: The Witches of the Western Wood is brought to life by the creative trio of writer Delilah S. Dawson, artist José Jaro, and colorist Xenon Honchar, with the first issue now available to read. The second issue of the five-part series is scheduled for release on June 17, 2026. Both issues are 32 pages long and will be available at local comic shops for $4.99 upon release.

In addition to confirming Mary Van Tassel’s original identity, the official synopsis for issue #1 further teases the core premise of the story: “Sarah and her twin are raised in the wild Western Wood, taught the ways of witchcraft, and forced to endure abuse and neglect. But a chance encounter with the hellish Hessian at the moment of his beheading lights a fire in Sarah, giving her the power to overcome those who have wronged her and grow into a fearsome witch.”

However, if that intriguing synopsis and the striking artwork showcased across the series’ variant covers are not enough to convince readers, the overwhelmingly positive reception for the first issue may be. According to League of Comic Geeks, the debut issue holds a “very positive” score of 4.2 out of 5 stars, suggesting that The Witches of the Western Wood is not only meeting fan expectations for a Sleepy Hollow spinoff but exceeding them.

One recurring sentiment in early reviews is that the series does an exceptional job of fleshing out the world of Sleepy Hollow that Tim Burton first created. As a result, fans can expect this prequel to expand the franchise in a meaningful way, both honoring the original film and adding new dimensions to its mythology.

But Wait, There’s More! Sleepy Hollow Has a Complete Comic Sequel Worth Bingeing

The Witches of the Western Wood shouldn't be the only recent Sleepy Hollow release on fans’ radar, especially for those who prefer to binge their stories in one go rather than wait for weekly or monthly installments. Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow also received another release in the past year, kicking off in October 2025: Return to Sleepy Hollow.

This five-part mini-series serves as a sequel to Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, taking place 15 years after the original story. In the series, Ichabod Crane receives a frantic letter urging him to return to Sleepy Hollow. Upon his arrival, Ichabod must reunite with his now-estranged love, Katrina Van Tassel, as the two work together to investigate a string of strange, unexplainable murders.

Like The Witches of the Western Wood, this sequel series further fleshes out the mythology of Sleepy Hollow, making both releases must-reads for fans craving a return to Tim Burton’s Headless Horseman reimagining.
