Few video game remakes have generated as much excitement or frustration as the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake. First announced during Sony's PlayStation Showcase on September 9, 2021, the project promised to rebuild BioWare's beloved 2003 RPG from the ground up for modern audiences.
Since then, however, updates have been few and far between, with reports of development setbacks, a shift in project oversight from Aspyr Media to Saber Interactive, and years without gameplay footage leaving many fans wondering whether the remake will ever see the light of day. Although Saber Interactive has repeatedly insisted that the game remains in development, the lack of substantial news nearly five years after its reveal has tested the patience of the Star Wars community.
With each major gaming showcase that passes without an appearance and the past week especially being full of missed opportunities, fans are slamming the official reveal for being a bit too preemptive, to put it lightly (via Reddit).
After an inexplicably long wait, fans hoping to get their hands on the Knights of the Old Republic Remake anytime soon are rightfully starting to lose their patience. With insiders such as 100% Star Wars stating earlier this year that we'd see an update soon, the most we've gotten in recent months is mere confirmation that the project is still in the works. It's gotten to the point where fans are starting to doubt the project even exists at all, despite assurances stating otherwise.
"I want the game as much as anyone, but until we see *any* physical proof of development I don’t buy it," says cricket9818, while IrishPigskin says, "If it’s in development, I don’t want to hear or see a damn thing until it’s less than a year from release."
With Summer Game Fest and the PlayStation State of Play event both passing in the last week with no mention of the KOTOR remake, fans are still hoping for a possible announcement or update at the end of the year's The Game Awards, but fans aren't holding their breath.
As Uchizaki points out, they think "the earliest realistic date I can think of is The Game Awards, since Hellraiser (the Mad Head Games title set to launch in a few months) will definitely have already been released by then... In any case, I wouldn't get my hopes up ... but maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised. Who knows."
With information on the project being more or less nonexistent at this point, gamers everywhere are scratching their heads over the decision to announce the game so early at all. Gamers point to examples like The Elder Scrolls 6 and Bethesda's announcement back in 2018 and how these early announcements seem a little counterproductive. The longer time drags on without any news, the more fans start to feel betrayed by the studio's choice to announce the game at all.
At this point, if we end up getting any Knights of the Old Republic Remake updates anytime soon, it will need to compensate for years of letting fans down, otherwise they're going to feel strung along even more.
