Will TikTok sell to Elon Musk?
Bloomberg News reported that China was considering options in the event that a new law goes into effect to force ByteDance to sell the platform or face a ban on U.S. app stores. Among the options that Chinese authorities are considering: selling to the billionaire owner of X, who has become one of President-elect Donald Trump‘s key allies.
But a spokesperson for TikTok said, “We are not commenting on Bloomberg writing pure fiction.” Bloomberg reported that the contingency plans also were in the preliminary stages.
The Supreme Court is expected to issue an opinion soon on whether to uphold the new law. During oral arguments last week, TikTok’s counsel said that if implemented, the social media site would go dark on Sunday, January 19, unless the law were struck down or put on hold.
Donald Trump has said that he opposes the law, but he doesn’t take office until the next day, January 20. He had told the high court to delay the law as he worked to pursue a “negotiated resolution” to prevent a shutdown of the app.
