One of the most recognizable songs in rock history seemingly came out of nowhere. In 1964, Roy Orbison unexpectedly took over the airwaves with his hot summer single, “Oh, Pretty Woman,” a song that embodies the yearning elicited when a woman is in the fullest expression of her prowess. Spending weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, the song was a burning hot fire that served as a monumental moment in Orbison’s career, though its commercial command eventually died out.
However, there is one particular component to the song’s legacy that has helped it long outlive its fiery ‘60s reign: In 1990, “Oh, Pretty Woman" was used for the title of the classic film, Pretty Woman. Starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, the movie’s reach was larger than life and helped up-level the song’s reach, too. The History Behind Roy Orbison's 'Pretty Woman'
A simple idea somehow turned into a massive sonic success. Co-written alongside Bill Dees, the inspiration behind Roy Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman” came about pretty casually. His wife was heading out the door, and he joked about whether she had enough money. Dees chimed in, “A pretty woman never needs any money,” and within minutes, they started writing. The song came together easily and seamlessly, as its narrative didn’t call for much heavy lifting.

The song was easy, which made it stick to one’s head before they even realized they were singing along. Following a mastermind formula, the record ultimately sold seven million copies and marked the highest point of Orbison's career. With big vocals meeting simple storytelling and a chilling guitar riff, the song singlehandedly defined Orbison’s signature sound.
