The cast isn’t the only reason MGM+ viewers are hoping for a second season though, as the story of The Winter King has proved to be incredibly suited for the small screen. Viewers have received well the blend of Arthurian myth and real-life events such as the introduction of Christianity to the British Isles and the rise and fall of Anglo-Saxon Britain. While The Winter King season 2 release date has yet to be revealed there are still plenty to digest when it comes to the plot of the next chapter.

The Winter King Hasn’t Been Renewed For Season 2 Yet
The Winter King hasn’t been renewed for season 2. With the first season concluding on November 5th, 2023 it’s possible that it will be a few months before Sony and MGM+ decide whether to renew the show, though it’s equally likely that a confirmation or cancelation for The Winter King season 2 could arrive much sooner.
The Winter King Season 2 Cast
The Winter King season 2 cast is yet to be announced, though it’s expected that most will be reprising their roles after the first season. The cast is led by Iain De Ceastecker (Overlord, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as Arthur Pendragon, with Nathaniel Martello-White (Misfits, Deadmeat) gaining notable praise for his fresh take on Merlin. Bernard Cornwell’s Arthurian fantasy is brought to life by a wide ensemble though, and The Winter King season 2 cast is expected to include:
- Jordan Alexandra (Doctor Who, Bridgerton) as Guinevere
- Valene Kane (Gangs of London, Blue Lights) as Morgan
- Stuart Campbell (Baptiste, SAS Rogue Heroes) as Deferl Cadarn
- Eddie Marsden (Deadpool 2, The Gentlemen) as Uther
- Andrew Gower (Outlander, Carnival Row) as Sansum
- Simon Merrells (Knightfall, Spartacus: Blood and Sand) as Gundleus
- Ellie James (VS., Girl/Haji) as Nimue
Many of the recurring and supporting cast members will also likely return for The Winter King season 2, as there are dozens of speaking roles throughout the show (as is typical for fantasy and period dramas). It’s also a guarantee that some new names will join, though until any The Winter King season 2 cast announcements are made it’s impossible to predict who these could be.
The Winter King Season 2 Story
While season finales are usually meant to be conclusive and explosive in their own right, the ending of The Winter King season 1 served more as a setup for season 2. After saving Derfel and Nimue, Arthur sets out for Dumnonia with the intention of killing Aelle and kicking the Saxons out of the territory. Obviously, that plot will likely dominate season 2 of The Winter King if it ever does happen, but there was also a clever tease at the end of the episode involving Merlin. The legendary wizard discovered the ancient Horn of Bran but found it was filled with blood. That cleverly implies that the future of the show will be anything but soft and pleasant.
